혼례에서 남녀위치의 변천 －전근대기와 근대기의 혼례식을 중심으로－ (Change of Position of Men and Women in Wedding Ceremony －Focusing on the Marriage Ceremonyof the Pre-modern and Modern Periods－)

초록

이 글은 전근대기부터 근대기까지의 혼례식 남녀위치의 변천을 살펴본 것이다. 혼인서약과 성혼기념 사진촬영 시의 남녀위치를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 그럼으로써 예에 근간을 둔 혼례식의 구성요소 가운데 하나인 ‘신랑과 신부의 위치’가 어떻게 규범화되었는지와 어떠한 질서유지의 장치로 기능하였는지 알 수 있었다.
전근대기 혼례식의 남녀위치는 ‘서동부서(壻東婦西)’와 ‘서서부동(壻西婦東)’으로 나뉘었다. ‘서동부서’는 주자가례의 친영에 따라 혼례식을 신랑의 집에서 행할 경우의 남녀위치라 할 수 있으며, ‘서서부동’은 혼례식을 신부의 집에서 행할 경우의 남녀위치라 할 수 있다. ‘서동부서’는 신랑이 동쪽에 신부는 서쪽에 위치하는 ‘왼쪽 우선’ 및 ‘남성 우선’의 남녀위치이며, ‘서서부동’은 신랑은 손님이므로 서쪽에 신부는 주인이므로 동쪽에 위치하는 ‘주동객서’의 남녀위치에 해당한다. 그러나 일반적으로 신부의 집에서 혼례식을 행한 전근대기에 ‘서동부서’와 ‘서서부동’이 혼재하였던 것으로 판단된다.
근대기 신식혼례식의 남녀위치는 주례의 시선으로 오른쪽에는 신랑이 왼쪽에는 신부가 위치했다. 이는 서양 기독교문화의 ‘오른쪽 우선’이 유교의 ‘남녀유별사상’과 만나 토착화되면서 출현한 한국만의 독특한 개신교적 남녀위치에서 출발하였다. 즉, 근대에 등장한 상업적인 전문 예식장의 혼례식이 당대 개신교 혼례식 형태를 따르면서 개신교적 남녀위치도 함께 근대기 신식혼례식의 대표적인 남녀위치로 자리매김하게 되었다. 또한 혼례사진 촬영 시의 남녀위치도 사진 수용 초기부터 ‘왼쪽 우선’의 전통적 남녀위치를 따르지 않고, ‘오른쪽 우선’ 관념의 서양문화를 따랐다. 인물을 기준으로 위계가 높은 사람을 상대적으로 위계가 낮은 사람의 오른쪽에 위치하도록 하였으며, 여성의 오른쪽에 남성이 위치하도록 하는 경향이 높았다.
이와 같이 전근대기부터 근대기까지 혼례식 남녀위치의 규범화가 이루어졌고, 이를 통해 가부장적인 ‘남성 우선’의 관념이 시대를 초월하여 관통했다고 볼 수 있다. 곧, 혼례식의 남녀위치가 남성중심적 사회 질서를 구현하는 데 기여하는 요소로 작용했던 것이다.

영어초록

This study investigates the positional shift of the bride and the bridegroom at the wedding ceremony, especially focused on the position of the bride and the bridegroom when they exchange wedding vows and take commemorative photographs. The purpose of this study is to find how the position of the bride and the bridegroom, which is regarded as one of the standard rules of the wedding ceremony based on the courtesy, has become the norm, and how it functions as the mechanism to maintain the social order.
In the pre-modern times, the position of the bride and the bridegroom at the wedding ceremony can be divided into two: One is the bridegroom stands in the east and the bride in the west, the other is the bridegroom stands in the west and the bride in the east. The former is, according to the custom called ‘Chinyoung’, one of the Confucian ritualism, meaning that the groom himself goes to the house of the bride to greet the bride, when the wedding is held at the groom’s house. The latter is when the wedding is held at the bride’s house. In the fashion that the bridegroom stands in the east and the groom in the west, the left and the male take priorities. On the other hand, in the fashion that the bridegroom stands in the west and the bride in the east follows the rule of the host standing in the east and the guest in the west. In other words, the groom, who is treated as a guest, stands in the west, and the bride, who is seen as the host, stands in the east. In pre-modern times, however, the wedding is generally held in the bride’s house, so it is supposed that the both practices mentioned above were held equally.
In modern times, the bridegroom stands in the east and the bride in the west from the officiant’s direction at the new mode of the wedding. This is the combination of the two religious beliefs: Christian idea, the right-first and Confucian idea, distinction between the sexes. It belongs to Christian position of the man and the woman, which is very unique in Korea. The wedding ceremony in the modern business wedding hall observes the contemporary Christian wedding custom. Consequently, Christian position of the man and the woman take roots in the modern wedding ceremony as the typical position. When the newly-weds take the commemorative photos, the position of the couple doesn’t follow the traditional position of the man and the woman but complies with the western idea of the right-first. At the very beginning, when taking wedding photos, those in higher hierarchy stand in the east of those in the relatively lower hierarchy, the man tends to stand in the right of the woman.
To sum up, from the pre-modern times to the modern times, the position of the bride and the bridegroom has been standardized, which helps the patriarchal concept transcend time. In other words, it can be concluded that the position of the bride and the bridegroom has played a role in developing male-oriented social order to some extent.
