초록

시에서 독자가 떠나가는 가장 큰 이유 중에 하나는 시가 어렵다고 생각되기 때문이다. 시의 본질인 애매성과 모호성, 그로 인한 다양한 해석의 열린 가능성은 시의 깊이를 심화시키지만, 그만큼 평범한 독자들과의 소통에 장애가 되는 것은 사실이다. 이에 서정주 시인은 떠나가는 독자를 잡기 위한 전략으로 자신의 시에 ‘액션’이라는 소설적인, 혹은 극적인 요소를 도입하였다. 바로 스토리텔링을 활용한 서사전략이다. 이야기야말로 독자와의 의사소통에 훌륭한 매개체가 될 것으로 서정주 시인은 판단했던 것이다. 그렇게 해서 탄생한 것이 서정주의 이야기시편들이다.
이야기시(narrative poem)의 요건은 ‘이야기’와 이야기를 말하는 ‘화자’다. 필자는 이 글에서 서정주 시에서 이야기를 재현하는 화자가 어떤 존재이며, 어떻게 이야기를 전달하고 있는지, 그리고 그가 전달한 이야기는 어떤 특징을 갖고 있는지를 이야기시에 나타난 화자를 유형별로 나누어 살펴보았다.
서정주 이야기시에서 화자는 세 가지 형태로 나눌 수 있다. ‘보고자로서의 화자’, ‘작중인물로서의 화자’, ‘비평가로서의 화자’가 그것이다.
Ⅱ에서는 시 「海溢」을 중심으로 보고자 화자에 대하여 살펴보았다. 보고자 화자는 자전적 체험을 바탕으로 이야기를 만들어 독자에게 마치 보고하듯 전달하는데, 특히 어린 시절 질마재에서의 체험은 보고자 화자에게 풍요로운 이야기 소재가 된다.
Ⅲ에서는 시 「處容訓」과 「朴赫居世王의 慈堂 娑蘇仙女의 自己紹介」를 중심으로 작중인물 화자에 대해 알아보았다. 작중인물 화자는 이야기 속 인물의 페르소나를 사용하여 그 인물을 연기함으로써 이야기를 재현한다.
Ⅳ에서는 시 「老人獻花歌」와 「水路夫人의 얼굴」, 그리고 「선덕여왕과 지귀의 艶史」를 중심으로 비평가 화자를 살펴보았다. 비평가 화자는 작중인물의 행위나 성격을 논평한다.
서정주 시인은 이들 이야기시의 화자를 통하여 서정적 자기고백의 시에서는 충분히 말할 수 없었던 자신의 이야기를 구체적으로 설명하고, 메시지를 효과적으로 전달한다. 자신의 견해를 직접적으로 드러내기도 한다. 시인은 자신의 정서를 이야기로 말함으로써 독자와의 원활한 의사소통을 지향했던 것이다. 따라서 서정주 시에서 이야기는 시인의 시적 정서에 대한 총체적 은유라고 볼 수 있다.
서정시가 이야기시로 전환되면서 시의 애매성과 모호성은 상당 부분 이야기의 명료성으로 전환된다. 상징과 생략은 설명으로 대체된다. 이렇게 시의 의미가 명료해지고 단순화된다는 것은 시의 본질에서 얼마만큼은 벗어난다는 것을 의미한다. 그러나 독자와의 소통이라는 측면에서 서정시가 가지는 한계를 이야기로써 극복하고자 한 시인의 의도는 높이 평가받아야 한다. 서정주 이야기시의 서사전략은 현대시가 일반 대중과 소통하는 방식으로서 앞으로도 관심 있게 논의되어야 할 것이다.

The Narrative Strategy in Seo Jeong-ju’s Narrative Poetry - Centering on 3 types of narrator -

One of the main reasons for readers abandoning poetry is because they think that poetry is difficult to understand. Poetry is by its nature vague and ambiguous, which consequently leaves it open to wide possibilities of various interpretations, but at the same time this just as much puts ordinary readers trying to understand it at a disadvantage. In order to catch fleeing readers, the poet Seo Jeong-ju’s strategy was to introduce a novelistic or dramatic ‘action’ element to his poetry. Indeed, storytelling is used as a narrative strategy. The poet Seo Jeong-ju judged that it is through the splendid medium of the story itself that he could communicate with the reader. From this were born Seo Jeong-ju’s volumes of narrative poetry.
The prerequisites of a narrative poem are a story and a narrator telling the story. In this work, I have presented the narrators of Seo Jeong-ju’s poems, divided into different types according to what kind of narrator tells the story, how the story is told, and what the distinctive characteristics of the stories being told are.
The narrators in Seo Jeong-ju’s poetry can be divided into three types: reporter-narrator, character-narrator, and critic-narrator.
In Ⅱ, I have examined the reporter-narrator, focusing on the poem ‘海溢(Tidal Wave)’. The story told by the reporter-narrator is based on personal experience, told in such a way as for readers to feel as if they were there, and the narrator-reporter particularly features strongly in the Chilmajae from childhood.
In Ⅲ, focusing on ‘處容訓(Cheoyong’s Lesson)’ and ‘朴赫居世王의 慈堂 娑蘇仙女의 自己紹介’ ("Self-introduction of Goddess Sa-so, Mother of King Park Hyukgeose.")’, I have examined the character-narrator. The character-narrator tells its story by using its character’s persona to act out the characters in the story.
In Ⅳ, focusing on ’老人獻花歌(Song of an Old Man Giving a Flower)’ and ‘水路夫人의 얼굴(Lady Soo-ro’s Face)’, and ‘志鬼와 善德女王의 艶史(Queen Seonduk and Jigwi’s Love Story)’, I have examined the critic-narrator. The critic-narrator comments on characters’ actions or personality.
Through the narrators in these narrative poems, the poet Seo Jeon-ju could concretely explain what he couldn’t have said in a lyrical self-confessional poem, and effectively convey his message. He could also directly reveal his own views. By telling his emotions through narrative, the poet and reader could share what he intended to communicate. Therefore the narrative of Seo Jeong-ju’s poetry can by all means be seen as a metaphor for the poet’s poetic emotion.
Converting verse to a story also converted a great deal of poetry’s ambiguity and vagueness to clarity. Symbols and ellipses are substituted with explanation. Clarifying and simplifying poetry’s meaning in this way could just as much be seen as breaking away from the essence of what poetry is. However, this one poet’s method of using narrative to overcome the limits of poetry in terms of communication with the reader should be regarded highly. Seo Jeong-ju’s narrative poetry’s narrative strategy, with its similarities to the communicative style of popular media in the modern era, should continue to discussed with interest in the future.
