초록

제5대 데본셔 공작부인(Duchess of Devonshire)인 조지아나 스펜서(Georgiana Spencer, 1757-1806)는 18세기 후반 영국 상류사회를 풍미한 유명인(celebrity)이었다. 백작의 딸로 태어나 공작의 아내가 된 조지아나는 당시 영국의 왕세자였던 조지 4세(George IV)뿐만 아니라 프랑스의 왕비였던 마리 앙투와네트(Marie Antoinette)와도 절친한 사이였으며 최신 유행의 선도자이자 남성 정치인들의 배후 실세로 국내외에서 막강한 영향력을 행사함으로써 생전에 이미 어떠한 여배우보다도 유명한 인물이었다. 평생 최상류층의 삶을 살았던 만큼 조지아나는 어려서부터 수많은 초상화의 주인공이 되었다. 일생 동안 그녀의 초상화는 유화나 파스텔, 수채화, 세밀화 등 다양한 매체와 크기로 제작되었으며 후터(Johann Heinrich Hurter, 1734-1799)와 같은 스위스 출신의 무명 세밀화가부터 게인스버러(Thomas Gainsborough, 1727-1788)나 레이놀즈(Joshua Reynolds, 1723-1792)와 같은 당대 최고의 초상화가들까지 폭넓게 조지아나를 화폭에 담았다. 본고는 조지아나의 초상화와 그녀의 삶, 즉 전기와의 관련성에 대한 궁금증에서 출발한다. 조지아나의 초상화는 그녀의 일생 중 어떤 측면을 시각적으로 재현한 것인가? 즉, 초상화(portraiture)는 전기(biography)와 어떤 관계가 있는 것일까? 초상화는 생존하는 특정 개인을 그린 그림이므로 개인의 인생과 밀접히 연관되어 있는 것은 자명해 보인다. 그러나 초상화를 연구하는 학자들이 이 문제를 본격적으로 고민하기 시작한 것은 최근의 일이다. 본고는 조지아나의 초상화 중 진위가 확실하고 미술사적으로 의미 있는 작품을 중심으로 이들 초상화가 조지아나의 일생 중 어떤 상황을 어떤 모습으로 어떻게, 아울러 왜 재현하는가를 탐구함으로써 초상화와 전기의 관계에 대한 의문을 심화시키고 이들의 변증법적 관계에 대한 심도 있는 논의를 촉구하고자 한 글이다.

영어초록

Georgiana Spencer (1757-1806), Duchess of Devonshire, was born in England as the eldest child of John Spencer, first Earl Spencer. The Spencers travelled widely in the Continent during Georgiana’s childhood, and at Spencer House in London they entertained countless men and women of letters and influence. As a result, Georgiana acquired a high level of culture as well as a sense of aristocratic debauchery. She married the fifth Duke of Devonshire in 1774 and instantly became a celebrity as the wife of the head of a prominent aristocratic dynasty. High society tried to imitate her fashion and she hosted countless parties and dinners for social and political purposes. The Devonshire House Circle boasted illustrious members including the Prince of Wales, the renowned playwright Richard Binsley Sheridan, and the leader of the Whig party, Charles James Fox. Georgiana played a pivotal role as a political hostess in supporting the Whigs, and her public campaigning for Fox in the 1784 Westminster election stirred both the supporters and opponents of Fox. A number of pamphlets and caricatures propagated the image of Georgiana as the epitome of corrupt nobility. In her private life Georgiana suffered from chronic addiction to gambling, and her gambling debt at one point amounted to the colossal sum of 100,000 pounds, which tormented her throughout her adult life. She also had an affair with the young politician Charles Grey, later second Earl Grey, giving birth to an illegitimate girl in 1792. To make matters worse, Georgiana in 1796 had a severe eye infection that left her right eye nearly blind and her facial features deformed. As an aristocratic daughter, wife, and mother, Georgiana was portrayed throughout her life by a variety of artists ranging from an obscure Swiss miniaturist to such luminaries as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. This essay aims to chronologically chart the portraits that capture the significant moments of Georgiana’s life and to explore the dialectical relationship between portraiture and biography. What exactly is being captured when a portrait is made of a known individual? How does a portrait relate to the life of the person portrayed? The French poet Charles Baudelaire once suggested that a portrait should be like a dramatized biography. This essay purports to emphasize the significance of this statement and explores a way to apply it in the study of portraits.
