신라의 백률사와 관음보살상 (Baekyulsa Temple of Silla and the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue)

초록

본고는 『삼국유사』 백률사조의 내용 중 도입부에 해당하는 백률사의 위치, 관음상 조상 경위에 초점을 맞추어 살핀 글이다. 본고에서 밝힌 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이차돈의 추모의식이 자추사 또는 백률사가 아닌 흥륜사에서 실시되고 있다는 점을 검토한 결과, 백률사는 자추사를 이은 절이 아님을 밝혔다. 백률사는 통일 전후 화랑, 백성들의 희생을 기념하기 위해 세운 사찰이거나, 전쟁으로 희생된 아이들을 기리고, 나아가 多産을 위해 세운 사찰일 수도 있다. 백률사는 통일 전후 중대 왕실의 위민정책의 일환으로 설치된 사찰이 아닐까 한다.
둘째, 백률사는 삼소관음도량 중 유일하게 지금까지 그 법맥을 이어오고 있는 사찰이다. 고려말 백률사는 여러 戰禍로 크게 쇠락하였고, 이후 조선 초까지 중수 작업이 진행되었다. 삼소관음도량 중 중생사와 민장사는 고려시대에 폐사되었고, 이곳에 봉안된 관음상은 영묘사에 이전되었다가 조선초 백률사를 중수하면서, 두 관음상을 이곳으로 이전하였다. 이때 백률사에는 3개의 관음상이 있었고, 이들 중 하나를 태조의 원찰인 양주 개경사로 이전 봉안하였다.
셋째, 고려말 조선초 백률사에는 목조 관음상이 봉안되어 있었다. 삼소관음도량의 하나인 중생사 관음상은 塑造였음으로 삼소관음상을 중국 畫工(또는 神匠)이 제작했다는 이야기는 사실이 아니다. 그리고 백률사 관음보살의 영험담으로 부례랑 설화 외에도 전쟁을 종식시켰고, 어리석은 사람을 지혜롭게 해 주었다는 설화도 있었는데, 일연은 번거롭다는 이유로 언급하지 않아 그 설화의 구체적인 내용을 알 수 없게 되었다.
고려말 조선초 백률사 관음보살을 백의관음상 또는 수월관음상이라고 했는데, 별개의 관음상은 아니었으며, 동일 관음상을 달리 표현했을 뿐이다. 물론 이 관음상이 신라시대의 작품인지, 이후 재조한 것인지는 확인할 수 없었다. 다만 불상에 대한 외경심이 컸던 신라인, 고려인들의 관념을 볼 때, 재조한 것이라 하더라도 초기 작품과 비교해 크게 어긋나지 않았을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the beginning of the contents of "Samguk Yusa" BaekyulSa(栢栗寺). The introduction mentions the location of Baekyulsa and the production process of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue. The following are the contents of this paper.
First, I examined the fact that the memorial ceremony of the second generation is being held at the Heungryunsa(興輪寺), not at the Jachusa(刺楸寺) or Baekyulsa. As a result, Baekyulsa said that it was not a temple after Zachusa. Baekyulsa may be a temple built to commemorate the sacrifice of Hwarangdo and the people before and after the reunification of the Three Kingdoms, or a temple built for the children who were sacrificed by war. I think that Baekyulsa is a temple established as part of the policy for the people in the royal family before and after the reunification.
Second, Baekyulsa is the only temple among the three Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva temples that has been continuing its history. In the end of the Goryeo period, Baekyulsa was greatly reduced by various wars, and reconstruction work was carried out until the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty. Among the three Avalokitesvara temples, Gaekyungsa and Minjangsa collapsed in the Goryeo Dynasty, and these statues were transferred to the Youngmueosa. In the early Joseon Dynasty, Baekyulsa was rebuilt and the two statues were transferred to this place. At this time, there were three statues in Baekyulsa, and one of them was transferred to Yangju Gaekyungsa, a memorial temple of Taejo.
Third, there was a wooden Avalokitesvara statue in Baekyulsa Temple in the early Joseon Dynasty. In addition to the story of the Buddhist priest, there was a story that ended the war and wised the foolish person. Ilyeon(一然) did not mention it because it was troublesome. As a result, the details of these tales became unknown.
In the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, the Avalokitesvara of Baekyulsa was called the White-Robed Avalokiteshvara(白衣觀音) or the Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara(水月觀音菩薩). This is not two Avalokiteshvara, but the same Avalokiteshvara. Of course, I could not confirm whether this Avalokitesvara statue was a work of the Silla period or later. However, when we look at the ideas of Silla and Goryeo people who had a great deal of awe of Buddha, it seems that even if it was reconstructed, it would not have been much different from the early works.
