초록

이 논문은 ‘뉴노멀’과 ‘코로나’ 시대에 붓다의 중도 자비와 연기 지혜에서 비롯된 인문학 불교학의 현재 지형과 미래 방법에 대해 고민한 글이다. 고타마 붓다는 인간이 직면하고 있는 가장 근본적인 고통인 생(로병)사의 과제를 해결하여 지혜의 길을 열어주었다. 붓다가 성취한 깨침의 완성 즉 생사의 극복은 붓다 내면의 성취로만 보아서는 안 될 것이다. 그의 성취는 인류의 지혜였으며 오늘 여기와 바로 지금 우리가 직면하고 있는 가장 주요한 고통의 해결과 다르기 않기 때문이다.
불교의 중도행과 연기법 및 사선정과 삼명육통, 불교학의 연기론과 일연구 논문불교의 지형과 불교학의 방법― ‘뉴노멀’과 ‘코로나’ 시대의 인문학 불교학의 현재와 미래- ‘연기적 앎’에서 ‘중도적 삶’으로* ― 고영섭(동경대 대학원 외국인 연구원) 1) * 대승 이전불교에서 고통의 자각[苦聖諦], 고통의 진단[集聖諦], 고통의 처방[道聖 諦], 고통의 치유[滅聖諦]로 해명되는 四聖諦의 형식은 대승불교의 修行四段인 진리의 확신[信], 진리의 이해[解], 진리의 수행[行], 진리의 체증[證]으로 구성된 始 覺四段의 과정에 대응시켜 논의를 전개해 갈 수 있다.6 불교철학_제8집(2021.04.30) 승론, 불타론과 보살설, 심식설과 불성론, 수도론과 열반론 등은 붓다가 성취한 깨침으로 나아가는 우리들의 과제일 것이다. 그런데 이러한과제가 오늘 여기를 사는 우리들에게 좀 더 가까이 다가오게 하려면어떻게 해야만 할까? 먼저 우리의 피부에 가까이 다가오는 사성제의고통의 자각-진단-처방-치유의 지형과 방법으로 전개되어야 할 것이다.
이 시대의 인문학자 불교학자들의 학문적 과제는 지금 우리가 직면하고 있는 가장 큰 고통의 문제에 대한 근본적인 해법과 구체적인 행동방안을 제시하는 것이다. 그리고 그렇게 제시된 것이 살아있는 불교학일 것이다. 살아있는 불교학은 불교학 고유의 주제들에 대해 궁구하면서도 동시대 사람들의 이해와 요구를 받아들이면서 서로 대화하고 소통하는 학문일 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 오늘 여기를 사는 우리들이 직면하고 있는 정치와 경제, 사회와 문화, 과학과 기술, 문학과역사, 철학과 종교, 예술과 교육 등 모든 영역에서 새로운 표준으로등장하는 문제들과 접목해서 해석하고 해명해야 할 것이다. 인문학자불교학자들의 현재와 미래의 화두 또한 순수불교학과 이론불교학의기반에 의거한 불교생사철학과 불교경제학 및 응용불교학과 실천불교학의 토대에 의거한 불교생태철학과 불교경영학 등과 같은 간주관적(inter subjectivity)이고 융복합적(cross over)인 학문을 통한 상호 소통과상호 실현일 것이다.
그러기 위해서는 정치와 경제, 사회와 문화, 과학과 기술, 문학과 역사, 철학과 종교, 예술과 교육 등 우리가 직면하고 있는 현실의 고통에 대한 자각-진단-처방-치유의 과정을 통해 진리의 확신-이해-수행-체증의 과정으로 나아가는 것이 요청된다. 결국 인문학자 불교학자들의화두는 순수불교학과 이론불교학 및 응용불교학과 실천불교학의 경계를 과감하게 넘어서서 우리가 직면하고 있는 현실 문제에 대해 널리 고영섭_ 불교의 지형과 불교학의 방법 7 화쟁하고 깊이 회통하여 지혜의 길을 열어가는 것일 것이다

영어초록

This paper examines the present landscape and future method of Buddhist studies in the era of the ‘new normal’ and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This method originally derived from the Middle Way of Compassion and Wisdom of the Dependent Origination of Buddha.
Gotama Buddha showed us the way of wisdom by resolving the suffering caused by the cyclic existence of birth and death, which is the most fundamental suffering that human beings face. The great enlightenment that Buddha accomplished — in other words, the attainment of release from the world of recurring rebirth — was not his only accomplishment.
Because the wisdom that he attained became the wisdom of humanity, the suffering he resolved is the very suffering that we face now to resolve.
The teaching of Buddha’s Middle Way, Dependent Origination, four stages of meditation, three kinds of wisdom, and six supernormal powers is what we must practice to attain Buddha’s enlightenment. Theories of Buddhist studies, such as Dependent Origination, one vehicle, Buddha and Bodhisattva, mind and consciousness, Buddha nature, path of cultivation, and nirvana, lead us to the same path. Is there any more tangible way to accomplish this goal of the extinction of suffering? To become more active and enthusiastic in striving for this outcome, we can use the four stages of method: self-awareness – diagnosis – remedy-healing.
The current challenge of Humanist-and Buddhist-studies of this era is identifying the fundamental solution and specific method for real-life situations and resolving the great suffering we face at present. Only when an idea suggests the solution for the suffering in this era will it be qualified to be called living Buddhist studies. Therefore, to become living Buddhist studies, a solution must interact with people and understand people’s needs. To do so, Buddhist studies must be able to interpret and explain ideas that are relevant to the real-life issues that people face, especially in the fields of politics, economics, society, culture, science, technology, literature, history, philosophy, religion, art, education, and so on.
Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that the present and future koan of Humanist- and Buddhist-studies scholars will be the intercommunication between intersubjective studies — such as pure, theoretical Buddhist studies — and cross-over Buddhist studies, such as applied Buddhist studies, practical Buddhist studies, Buddhist life and death philosophy, Buddhist economics, and Buddhist ecology philosophy, Buddhist business administration.
To resolve this issue, Buddhist studies must undergo the aforementioned four stages of process (self-awareness – diagnosis – remedy – healing) in real-life issues; this process will correspond to the four stages of practice in the Mahayana era (faith – understanding – practice – enlightenment to the truth). Eventually, this fundamental koan should open the path of wisdom by moving beyond these theories to help people get released from the suffering in the present era.
