사회감정과 말의 증상들 －오정희의 「별사」, 「야회」, 「밤비」를 중심으로 (Social Emotion and Symptoms of Words －With a focus on A Farewell Address, A Night Party, and The Night Rain by Oh Jeong-hee)

초록

이 논문은 사회감정이 오정희 소설에서 어떤 방식으로 형상화 되는지 분석한다. 1980년 한국 사회의 제도 변화는 5·18 광주민주화운동으로 인한 신군부의 공포가원인이며, 언론을 통해 공포의 역전과 전이가 시도된다. 이 과정에서 ‘안전사회’와안정 담론은 구성되며, 이는 역설적으로 사회 감정으로서 불안과 공포 등을 배태시킨다. 1981년은 제도가 정착되는 과정에서 정치성이 한층 첨예해지는 시기였다. 이 시기 발표한 오정희의 「별사」, 「야회」, 「밤비」는 사회감정으로서 말의 증상들을다음과 같이 드러낸다.
첫째 「별사」에서 정옥의 남편은 실종 상태인데, 그 실종은 사회적 죽음을 상징한다. 정옥의 불안은 사회적 죽음의 목격에서 기인하며, 연대 가능한 공동체가 부재한다는 점과 미래 전망에 대한 실패로 증폭된다. 정옥은 증언 불가능의 현실 상황으로 인해 그의 의식 속에서 남편의 행적을 소환하게 되는데, 이는 유폐 되다시피 한 자를 일상으로 복귀시키는 서사라는 측면에서 사회적 죽음을 맞이한 자를위한 제의이며 애도이다. 둘째 「야회」는 당시 상위중산계급이 안정 담론을 재강화하는데 기여하고 있음을 비판적으로 보여주며 ‘안전사회’의 양가성에 대해 갈등하는 존재로 서술자는 위치한다. 이 소설에서 사용된 일부 말줄임표는 신문 지면의검열 삭제 공백과 유사한 형태를 보이는데, 이 말의 공백은 ‘안전사회’에서 불완전하게 말할 수밖에 없는 역설적 상황을 암시한다. 셋째 「야회」와 「밤비」에서 소문은광주민주화운동의 은폐된 진실과 죽음에 대한 사회적 징후이다. 갑작스러운 죽음이 갖는 각자의 서사를 소문이라는 ‘이야기성’으로 해소하고 있지만 그 과정에서말의 폭력이 이웃을 향하기도 한다. 발화 불가능성을 우회하는 지점에서 사회감정은 말의 증상으로 표출되었다.

영어초록

This study sets out to analyze how anxiety as a social emotion is embodied in novels by Oh Jeong-hee. In 1980, institutional changes in the South Korean society were caused by the fear of the new army group following the Gwangju Democratization Movement on May 18 with the press making an attempt at the reversal and transfer of fear. This process witnessed the organization of a 'safety society' and stability discourse, from which anxiety and fear etc as a social emotion arose from paradoxically. In 1981, political became even acuter in the settlement process of institutions. Oh Jeong-hee published A Farewell Address, A Night Party, and The Night Rain during the period. These works reveal the symptoms of social emotions as follows: first, Jeong-ok’s husband is missing in A Farewell Address, and his missing symbolizes his social death. Her anxiety stems from her witnessing his social death and is amplified by the absence of a community that she can join and her failure with a future prospect. Driven by the real situation that does not allow her to testify, she summons her husband’s whereabouts in her consciousness. This is her way of holding a memorial service and mourning for him that has faced a social death in that it is a narrative to return a man that is almost incarcerated to everyday life. Secondly, A Night Party critically shows that the upper middle class contributes to the re-strengthening of the stability discourse in those days. In the novel, Myeong-hye is situated as a rival with the ambivalence of the safety society. Some ellipsises used in the novel show a similar form to empty spaces in newspapers after censorship and deletion. This "vacuum of words" implies a paradoxical situation in which one cannot help talking incompletely in a 'safety society'. Finally, Rumors in the Night Party and Night Rain is social signs of the concealed truth and death of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. It solves the narrative of each person's sudden death with the 'story' of a rumor, but the violence of words is directed to the neighbor. These findings indicate that the point where anxiety as a social emotion is manifested as a symptom begins where the impossibility of ignition makes a detour.
