중국 신시기 남성 소설에 나타난 남성의 몸 - 지식인 남성의 성애화된 몸을 중심으로 (Male’s Body Image Appeared in Chinese Literature by Male Writers in the Xinshiqi: Focused on the Male Elite’s Sexualized Body)

초록

This thesis is to research the meanings of male’s body image in the Chinese literature written by male writers in the Xinshiqi. It is focused on intellectual male’s body that has been sexualized. The body images of the male elite written by male themselves in the Xinshiqi diverge from the normality. Defective male ego’s body symbolizes personal and existential crisis of his own or negative reality of a society. The major literary works are “Half of a man is woman”and “Green flower blossoming tree” by Zhang Xianliang, “Ruined city” by Jia Ping’ao and “Daydream of Qiang he” by Liu Heng. The bodies of male that has lost the virtue of being as the intelligentsia have been described as sexually minor or impotent. However, when he successfully acquires superior status as the intelligentsia, or gets to win recognition, his sexualized body returns to normality.
A male ego’s sexualized body has been belonged to the private territory as a space for the ego’s existential matter. And when it comes across the national/ ethnic/ social discourse, it becomes a metaphor that depicts the public reality. The male ego’s disabled body symbolizes a pessimistic reality that oppresses individuals, materialized society that values and ideology have been reversed, and the other side of premodern China. But when the disabled male body recovers, his body image shifts to a realm where the public ideal is expected to be realized. On the other hand, when his sexualized body remains to float outside of the normality, the body image represents dark reality of society and culture, and gets to give accordant criticism.
It is interesting that the elite male’s sexualized body reflects his colonial subconsciousness. On the course of regaining his identity as the intelligentsia through his sexualized body, he schematizes a dichotomy of male.sex.sexuality/ female.sex.sexuality,mind/ body, sup eriority/inferiority. Accordingly, he also divides things as social stratum, class, region and gender into elite/worker, city/country, the West/the East(China), enlightenment/unenlightenment. Based upon this dichotomy, the male intelligentsia confirms his sexual superiority and gets restored. The male elite put non-elite male and female as the other to put himself as the main stream, and that reminds us the way the imperialism puts its colony as the other. And it shows that the male intelligentsia of the Third world secretly forms the colonial mind. What it suggests is that the writers mentioned earlier use sexualized male bodies to get out of the existential crisis and to be restored. However, the sexualized bodies apparently are used to prove the intelligentsia’s limited male ego as well.
