초록

인터넷 밈은 디지털 미디어 환경에서 흉내내기와 리믹스를 통한 다양한 모방과 결합 및 파생 또는 링크와 복사 등으로 원본 그대로 확산하고 공유함으로써 대중의 감성과 창의적 의미구성을 자극하는 대표적인 소통방식이다. 따라서 인터넷 밈은 소셜 네트워크 문화에서 성장한 세대, 네트워크 개인주의에 가장 익숙한 모바일 네이티브(mobile native)를 이해하는 단초가 된다.
소셜 네트워크와의 ‘연결’이 ‘사회적 존재’로 기능할 수 있는 기본적 조건이라는 사실을 가장 충실하게 수용하는 모바일 네이티브에게 세계에 대한 인식과 타자와의 소통은 소셜미디어들을 통해 이루어지므로 거의 무제한적으로 디지털 콘텐츠를 소비하는 성향이 강하다. 그러므로 모바일 네이티브는 다른 세대에 비해 유동적 소비에 익숙하다.
모바일 네이티브에게 소셜미디어는 자기 세대 혹은 특정 커뮤니티에서 형성된 맥락에서만 이해할 수 있는 코드가 생산 및 소비되는 핵심적 공간이다. 따라서 소셜 네트워크에서 다양한 맥락에 의해 생성된 코드는 일반적으로 특정 커뮤니티의 스타일과 분위기, 특정한 커뮤니케이션 과정에서 형성된 맥락과 밀접하게 연관된다. 이러한 코드들이 커뮤니티에 속한 다수에게 수용 및 활용되는 경우 인터넷 밈으로 전화될 가능성이 커진다. 그러므로 모바일 네이티브에게 내부적 코드와 이를 기반으로 하는 발전된 밈은 커뮤니케이션의 중요한 도구로 기능하게 된다.
특정한 맥락과 코드에서 활성화되는 인터넷 밈의 특성은 한 사회의 특정 시기나 독특한 상황을 이해할 수 있는 지점이 될 수 있다. 또한 인터넷 밈을 ‘문화적 아이디어의 집합체’로 이해한다면 집합체를 구성하는 개별적 요소들의 분석을 통해 집합체를 생성한 한 사회의 다양한 목소리의 내용과 의도를 이해하는 구체적이고 실제적 자료들로 활용될 수 있다. 또한 이러한 가능성은 인터넷 밈을 유희만이 아니라 자기 표현과 의사소통의 수단으로 활용하는 모바일 네이티브에 대한 이해와 분석에도 적용될 수 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 인터넷 밈에 대한 연구는 인터넷 밈을 창작·변형·향유하는 모바일 네이티브의 디지털 리터러시를 이해하는데도 적지 않은 기여를 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Internet memes are a typical form of communication in the digital media environment that stimulates public emotions and creative meaning-making through imitation, remixing, combining and derivation, or linking and copying to spread and share the original. Internet memes are thus a key to understanding mobile natives, a generation that grew up in social network culture and is most familiar with networked individualism.
For mobile natives, who most fully embrace the idea that being "connected" to social networks is a fundamental condition for being able to function as a "social being," their perception of the world and their interaction with others is driven by social media, so they are inclined to consume almost unlimited amounts of digital content. Mobile natives are therefore more accustomed to fluid consumption than other generations.
For mobile natives, social media is a key space where codes are produced and consumed that can only be understood in the context of their generation or a particular community. Thus, the codes generated by different contexts on social networks are usually closely associated with the style and tone of a particular community and the context created by a particular communication process. When these codes are accepted and utilized by the majority of the community, they are more likely to be called internet memes. Therefore, for mobile natives, internal codes and the evolved memes based on them function as important communication tools.
The nature of internet memes, which are activated in specific contexts and codes, can be a point of reference for understanding a society at a particular time or unique situation. Furthermore, if internet memes are understood as "aggregates of cultural ideas," the individual elements that make up the aggregates can be analyzed and used as concrete, tangible resources to understand the content and intentions of the various voices in a society that created them. This possibility also means that Internet memes can be applied to the understanding and analysis of mobile natives who use them not only for entertainment but also as a means of self-expression and communication. Thus, the study of Internet memes can contribute significantly to understanding the digital literacies of mobile natives who create, transform, and consume Internet memes.
