초록

임진왜란은 강화교섭을 기점으로 두 시기로 나뉜다. 이 글에서는 강화교섭기에서 정유재란 시기 조선이 명에 보낸 사행을 분석했다. 이를 통해 새로운 전쟁의 양상이 사행에 미친 영향을 살피고, 사행이 이후 조선과 명의 외교 관계에 어떤 변화를 주었는지 추적하고자 했다.
이 시기 조선의 사행은 세 시기로 구분할 수 있다. 먼저 강화교섭 시기의 사행은 조선의 세자 책봉을 요청하거나, 명의 일본 책봉사(冊封使)와 함께 조선의 사절을 일본으로 보내기 위한 명분을 확보한다는 목적이 있었다. 그러나 교섭이 결렬되고 전쟁 위기가 높아지자, 조선은 명에 이를 급히 전하며 다시 군사 지원을 요청했다. 명은 지원을 결정하였으나 한편으로 조선의 대비 현황을 비판하며 조선을 제어하려 했다. 조선은 명을 거스르지 않으면서 이를 거절하기 위한 사절을 보냈다. 전쟁 재개 후, 조선은 명에 감사와 사죄를 함께 표하는 사절을 보냈다. 전쟁 중 명군 지휘관이 탄핵을 당하자 조선은 그를 구원하기 위한 사행을 보냈다. 이를 빌미로 모함을 당하기에 이르자, 조선은 자국을 변호하기 위한 사행을 여러 차례 보냈다.
정유재란을 거치며 사행이 가진 임무는 다양해졌다. 군사 요청이라든지 명군이 주도하는 강화교섭 반대라는 비교적 단순하고 직접적인 목표를 넘어, 다양한 목적을 가진 사행이 구성되었다. 사행이 북경에서 명의 관청이나 관원에게 직접 문서를 전하는 일도 빈번해졌다. 조선과 명의 관계에서 조선 사행의 형태에는 일련의 변화가 생겨났다.

The Imjin War can be divided into two phases, characterized by the Peace Negotiations. The Jeongyu War is the name given to the conflict that broke out again after these negotiations fell through. This study examines the instances where diplomatic envoys were sent by Joseon to Ming during the period between the Peace Negotiations and the Jeongyu War. Through this analysis, the study aims to investigate how new developments in the war influenced the use of envoys and how the changes to these deployments shaped the diplomatic ties between Joseon and Ming.
Joseon's deployment of envoys during the Jeongyu War can be divided into three periods. First, delegates were sent to Ming during the Peace Negotiations to ask for the coronation of the crown prince or to obtain justification for sending Joseon's representatives to Japan alongside Ming 's delegates. However, after the talks fell through and the likelihood of war began to increase, Joseon sent urgent messages to Ming, alerting them about this development and requesting additional military assistance. Ming agreed to Joseon's request but also criticized them for their lack of preparation. In response, Joseon dispatched more envoys to Ming to refute this attempt while still maintaining peace with them. After the war resumed, Joseon sent messages to Ming, expressing their gratitude and acknowledging the earlier criticism. When the leader of Ming's army was impeached, Joseon arranged envoys to appeal for reconsideration. This was followed by several more dispatches to defend against Ming's false accusations regarding the appeal, which caused significant turmoil in the internal politics of Joseon.
After the Jeongyu War, the missions entrusted to Joseon's envoys became more and more complex. These changes were brought about by the ever evolving situations. During this period, envoys were deployed for a variety of purposes which went beyond those that were relatively simple and direct, such as requesting military assistance or opposing the Peace negotiations led by Myong. There were more instances of delegates delivering documents directly to Ming's government offices or officials in Beijing. The importance of Joseon's envoys in the alliance with Ming increased, and Joseon made the most of this opportunity. Such developments became prominent in the relations between Joseon and Ming in the years that followed.
