According to the four Gospels, Jesus came into conflict with the Jewish leaders all along his pubhc ministry and the conflict resulted in his brutal death on the cross. What kind of conflict was it, and why had that conflict been brought into the serious and extreme result? The impact and wave of the conflict can effectively be explained by the anthropological concepts of purity and pollution. The concepts of purity and pollution which have been developed to explam the system and order of a society was suggested by the British anthropologist Mary Douglas and have been applied to the study of the New Testament by scholars such as Bruce Wilma and Jerome Neyrey. These concepts of purity and pollution can also be the conceptual tool for understanding the conflict between Jesus and Jewish leaders over the legal systems in the first century Jewish society. This study on Mark 2:1-12 is the first of the attempts to explain the conflict over the forgiveness of sins which is the essential element in the Jewish sacrificial system. In this paper the following thesis will e developed: The way of forgiveness proclaimed by Jesus had raised the socio-political conflict which had come into collision with the Jewish temple sacrificial system developed by the Jewish scribes and so the conflict had become the starting point of his crucifixion. Jesus' ministry of healing the paralyzed man was not done simply to cure the disease itself but to heal the social illness in order to pursue the transformation of the Jewish oppressive social system and symbolic order The author's intent of presenting this story was not simply to present the miraculous healing power of Jesus but to present the new way of forgiveness of sins through the Son of Man. In the new age of God's salvation the authority of forgiveness of sins has been entrusted not to priests and scribes but to the Son of Man. The forgiveness through the Son of Man is the gracious act of God that has been effective not through the temple sacrifices but through faith in the Son of Man. In this regard Jesus' proclamations of the forgiveness of sins(Mk 2:5, 10) are the manifestation of the coming of the Kingdom of God. The new way of God's grace, however, had been expressed m conflict with the traditional way of forgiveness. Although Jesus had shown the new way of forgiveness by raising the paralytic, he must have faced the conflict with the Jewish leaders which will finally lead to his crucifixion.
