근대 계몽기 잡지에서의 오쿠마 시게노부大隈重信 수용: “제국의 대리인”의 측면에 주목하여 (Acceptance of Shigenobu Okuma(大隈重信) in the magazines of Korean enlightenment period-Focusing on the aspect of “agent of the empire”)

초록

본고는 한나 아렌트가 정의한 “제국의 대리인”이라는 개념 아래서 근대 계몽기 조선 지식인 잡지에서 나타난 오쿠마 시게노부(大隈重信)의 독해 양상을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
『태극학보』, 『서우』, 『대한흥학보』 등의 근대계몽기 학술지 안에서오쿠마 시게노부가 수용되는 양상은 생물학적이고 당대 살아있는 인간으로서 오쿠마 시게노부보다는 매체에서 재현된 이미지로서 오쿠마 시게노부에 더 가깝고, 오쿠마 시게노부 자체에 대한 것이라기보다는 조선의 정치 영역, 지식의 영역과 이해관계 아래서 식민정책의 대변자로오쿠마 시게노부가 의미화되는 양상을 가리킨다.
오쿠마 시게노부로 상징되는 “제국의 대리인”(여기서는 한나 아렌트의개념을 빌려 “제국의 대리인”이라는 표현을 사용한다. “제국의 대리인”이란 식민지에 대해 시혜적이고, 식민지 상황에 무관심한 태도를 일관되게 보이며 식민지를 계몽시키는 것이 본국의 영광이자 문명화의 사명이라고 여기는 식민 본국의 주요 정치가들을 가리키는 개념이다.)과 그것과 관련된 교육적, 문화적 기관들을 통해 식민지 지식인은 자신의 정체성을 형성한다.
물리적으로 정신적으로 제국의 경계가 확장되어 가면서 조선의 내부적인 담론 또한 지정학적인 성격을 띠어갔다. 장소와 권력을 결합하는논의들이 생겨났고 제국적 패권주의와 스스로를 구분해 식민지로 자기인식을 하는 경향이 생겨남과 동시에 다른 한편으로는 제국에 스스로를동일시하는 수사들 또한 만들어졌다. 학술지 안에서 일본의 제국주의의침략행위는 ‘외교’적 행위로 의미화되거나 일본이 열강에 편입되는 과정이 열강으로부터 ‘동정’을 얻는 과정으로 설명되고 있다.
에드워드 사이드는 『문화와 제국주의』에서 식민지 저항이나 민족주의가 제국문화에 의해 이미 수립된 여러 형식, 또는 적어도 제국문화의영향을 받거나 제국 문화에 침식된 여러 형식을 재발견하지 않고는 불가능하다는 점을 말한 바 있다. 오쿠마 시게노부의 글을 인용하며 조선의단결력을 평가하는 지성심의 글 등을 통해 민족주의와 민족지학이 제국과 같은 언어체계와 질서를 공유하며 탄생한다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to clarify the reading aspects of Shigenobu Okuma appearing in Chosunintellectuals magazines in the modern enlightenment period under the concept of “agent ofthe empire” defined by Hannah Arendt. Here, Shigenobu Okuma refers to the very importantpolitician and educator of modern Japan, and at the same time is the name representing thethoughts and philosophy of Shigenobu Okuma.
The acceptance of Shigenobu Okuma in modern enlightenment journals such as Taegeukhakbo, SeoWoo, DaehanHeung Hakbo is closer to Shigenobu Okuma as an image reproduced ina medium rather than a biological human. It also refers to the way Shigenobu Okuma becomesmeaningful as a spokesperson for colonial policy under the political, knowledge, and interestsof Joseon, rather than about Shigenobu Okuma itself.
The colonial intellectuals form their own identity through the “agent of the empire” symbolizedby Shigenobu Okuma (here, the expression “agent of the empire” is used by borrowingthe concept of Hannah Arendt. The “agent of the empire” consistently shows an attitude ofcontempt for the colony and indifference to the colonial situation. It is a concept that refers tothe major politicians in the colonial home country who considers enlightening the colony tobe the glory of the home country and the mission of civilization.) and its related educationaland cultural institutions.
As the boundaries of the empire expanded physically and mentally, the internal discourse ofJoseon also took on a geopolitical character. The discussions have a tendency to recognize itselfas a colony by separating itself from imperial hegemony. On the other hand, the discussionshave rhetoric that identifies itself with the empire. In academic journals, Japanese imperialism’saggression is expressed as a “diplomatic” act, or the process of Japan’s incorporation intothe powers is explained as a process of obtaining sympathy.
Edward Said said in Culture and imperialism that colonial resistance or nationalism is impossiblewithout rediscovering the various forms already established by imperial culture, or atleast the forms influenced by or eroded by imperial culture. It can be seen that nationalism andethnography are born by sharing the same language system and order as the empire throughwritings by Ji Seong Sim that evaluate the unity of Joseon, citing the writings of ShigenobuOkuma.
