조선후기 필기집에 수록된 사회적 약자에 대한 기록과 서술 방식 -『골동록(汨蕫錄)』을 중심으로 - (The record and description of the Social Underdogs in the Pil-Gi-Jib of the late Joseon Dynasty - a focus on 『Gol-Dong-Rok』 -)

초록

이 논문은 고전산문 자료 가운데 하나인 필기집에 수록된 사회적 약자의 형상과 서술 방식을 주목하고, 그것의 활용 방향에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 본고에서 주목한 텍스트는 18세기 영남 남인 조보양이 편찬한 필기집 『골동록』이다. 『골동록』은 조선시대에 편찬된 여타 필기집과 같이 시화, 일화, 사화, 논변 등과 관련된 단형서사가 주를 이루고 있다. 하지만 『골동록』의 경우 맹인·여성·승려·점술가 등 조선사회에서 사회적 약자에 해당되는 인물 일화가 다수 수록되어 있어 주목을 끈다. 그들은 조선사회에서 주목받지 못한 이들이며 역사적 존재로 잘 거론되지 않는 일반 기층민이었다. 하지만 엄연히 생동하는 존재로 조선 사회의 구성원이기도 했다. 조보양의 시선에 포착된 사회적 약자이긴 했지만, 그들은 당대 조선사회를 구성한 다양한 일원 가운데 하나로 생동감 있는 존재로 호명되었다는 게 중요하다. 『골동록』에 포착된 사회적 약자는 기본적으로 중세 이데올로기의 구도 안에서 움직이고 있었다. 하지만 억압적 구조 속에서 인정을 구현하기 위해 노력하거나 배려와 포용을 실천하는 존재로 형상화 되었다. 그리고 이를 효과적으로 드러내기 위해 인물전의 서술방식을 차용하여 존재감을 부각시키고, ‘이야기하기’ 방식을 통해 생동감 있는 존재로 묘사되고, 포착되었다. 『골동록』에 기록된 사회적 약자의 인물 형상은 동시대 필기집에 비해 상대적으로 다양하게 등장하는 편이다. 그리고 다양한 인물 형상을 주목하고 기록한 것은 최소한 조선 사회의 구성원으로 존재를 일정부분 인정한 것이라 할 수 있다. 물론 이것이 사회적 약자를 당당한 역사의 주체로 전면화 시킨 것이라 하긴 어렵다. 하지만 사회적 약자를 응시하고 기록하여 존재와 역동을 포착하고자 한 점에서 의미가 있다. 특히 이러한 고전산문 자료에 수렴된 사회적 약자의 존재는 전근대사회 역시 다양한 사람들이 공존한 사회였음을 증명하는 것으로 주목된다. 그리고 이러한 자료는 혐오와 배제, 차별을 운운하는 우리 사회에 다양성의 의미를 전근대사회의 문헌 기록을 통해 재조명하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 따라서 고전산문 텍스트의 활용은 해당 자료를 바라보는 데 있어서 전근대적이라는 일방적이고 단선적인 시각에서 벗어나는 것으로 부터 출발할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the shape and description of the socially disadvantaged in Fil-gi-jip, one of the classical prose materials, and considers the educational meaning it has. The text that I've noticed in this paper is 『Gol-Dong-Rok』, a Pil-Gi-Jib the collection of various forms of writings by Cho, Bo-Yang, known as a Nam-In in Yeong-Nam Province in the 18th century. 『Gol-Dong-Rok』 usually consists of short narratives such as discussions on writing poems, anecdotes, thoughts on historic events, and logical arguments like other Pil-Gi-Jib compiled during the Joseon Dynasty. However, 『Gol-Dong-Rok』 attracts attention as it contains many anecdotes of the socially disadvantaged in Joseon society such as blind people, women, monks, and fortune tellers.
They were not noticed in Joseon society and were ordinary base people who were not often mentioned as historical beings, but they were also members of the Joseon society as they were strictly alive. Although they were socially disadvantaged people captured by Cho, Bo-yang's gaze, it is important that they were called alive as one of the various members of the Joseon society of the time.
The social underdogs captured in the 『Gol-Dong-Rok』 were basically moving within the structure of medieval ideology. However, it was shaped as a person who tried to realize compassion in an oppressive structure or practiced consideration and inclusion. In order to effectively reveal this, the character's narrative style was borrowed to highlight its presence, and it was described and captured as a lively being through the 'talking' method. The figures of the socially disadvantaged figures recorded in the 『Gol-Dong-Rok』 are relatively diverse compared to the contemporary Pil-Gi-Jib. In addition, attention and records on the various figures are at least partially recognized as members of Joseon society. Of course, it is hard to say that this has completely transformed the socially disadvantaged into a proud subject of history. However, it is meaningful in that it aims to capture existence and dynamics of the socially disadvantaged by staring at and recording them. In particular, the presence of the socially disadvantaged converging on these classical prose materials proves that the Pre-modern Society was also a society where various people coexist. And this material can help shed light on the meaning of diversity in our society, which calls for disgust, exclusion, and discrimination, through the literature records of the Pre-modern Society. Therefore, the educational use of classical prose texts needs to start from escaping one-sided view of pre-modernity in looking at the data.
