두 개의 암초에 맞선 실험적 항해 (Experimental Navigation Coping with Two Reefs)

초록

오늘까지도 학계의 통일한국문학사 집필을 위한 사전 정지작업으로서의 월북문인들의 행방을 찾는 연구는 치열하게 전개되고 있다. 올해로 탄생 100주년을 맞이하는 월북문인으로는 고경흠․안막․안함광․이찬․허준 등이 있다. 고경흠과 허준은 소설을 썼고, 이찬은 시인이었으며, 안막과 안함광은 평론가로 활동했다. 하지만 북한문학사에서는 이찬을 제외하고는 별다른 언급이 없다. 그 이유는 이찬을 제외하고는 모두 정치적인 숙청을 당한 것으로 판단되기 때문이다.
돌이켜 보면, 월북문인들은 역사의 도도한 흐름 속에서 파시즘과 분단 상황이라는 두 개의 암초를 맞아 나름대로 예술적으로 실험적인 도전을 시도했지만, 커다란 성과를 남기지 못한 채 좌초하고 말았다. 해방 후 북한에서는 1967년을 기점으로 카프문학의 전통에 기반을 두려는 그룹과 김일성의 항일빨치산 투쟁을 새로운 전통으로 형성하려는 그룹간의 치열한 노선투쟁이 전개되었다. 전자는 마르크스-레닌주의 미학에 근거를 두고 있었고 후자는 소위 주체사상을 토대로 삼았다. 결과는 당연히 김일성이 후원하는 후자의 승리로 종결되었다. 그 결과 한설야와 더불어 고경흠․안함광․안막 등이 희생된 것으로 판단된다. 분명하지는 않지만, 허준도 이 무렵 함께 역사에서 실종된 것으로 판단된다.
같은 카프계열의 작가라고해도 그들이 지향한 삶과 문학은 프리즘에 비친 빛의 색깔처럼 실로 다양다기 했다. 배제의 원칙이 아닌 ‘수렴의 논리’에 의해 접근해 들어가자 공통적인 현상으로서 보편성이 자리 잡고 있음을 확인하게 되었다. 또 추억과 회상의 정서가 아닌 <지금 - 여기>의 시선으로 바라다보게 되자, 정치적 획일성이 아닌 문화적 스펙트럼에 대한 아쉬움이 더욱 가깝게 다가왔다. 요약하면, 첫째 5명의 월북문인들의 삶과 문학에서 예술가로서의 ‘순수열정’을 발견할 수 있었다. 둘째, 개개인의 사상과 세계관의 편차는 매우 컸지만, 공통적으로 파시즘에 맞선 민족주의적 열망을 가지고 있었음을 확인하게 되었다. 셋째, 이들 월북문인들이 분단 상황 속에서도 평등․민주의 이상적 사회주의의 국가 건설을 지향한 것만은 분명하다. 넷째, 다섯 명의 월북 문인들이 모두 어느 정도 정치적 헤게모니 쟁탈전의 희생자로 드러났다. 이찬도 간접적인 희생자로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 다섯째, 이들 1910년에 출생한 예술가들은 ‘작가적인 치열성’이 부족했다고 비판할 수 있다. 즉 상당수 문인들이 문학운동사에서는 자료가 남아있지만 창작의 공간인 자료실에는 남아 있는 텍스트가 얼마 되지 않기 때문이다.

영어초록

Even today the academical efforts seeking for the traces of the writers who crossed over into North Korea have steadily been developed as a prior preparation to write a unified history of Korea Literature. The writers who crossed over into North Korea, at the centennial anniversary of their birth this year, are Go Kyung-heum, An Mak, An Ham-kwang, Lee Chan, Heo Jun, etc. Go Kyung-heum and Heo Jun wrote novels, Lee Chan was a poet, and An Mak and An Ham-kwang were active in criticism. The history of literature of North Korea, however, mentions nothing about them except Lee Chan. It seems that all of them but Lee Chan have gotten the political purges.
Judging from the situation, it seems that the literary men who crossed over into North Korea had tried their own artistic experiments in rushing torrents of history but had struck on two reefs of Fascism and the division of the country, nothing special left behind. Since 1967 after the 1945 Liberation in North Korea there had been fierce struggle for power between two groups, the one who wished to hold by the literary tradition of KAPF(Korea Artist Proletariat Federation), the other who intended to form a new tradition paying tribute to the anti-Japanese partisan struggle of Kim Il Sung. The former was based on the aesthetics of Marxism-Leninism and the latter was formed on the basis of the idea of the so-called Juche. The struggle for power had justly resulted in the victory of the latter whom Kim Il-sung backed up. Consequently, it seems that Go Kyung-heum and An Ham-kwang and An Mak and others followed the case of Han Seol-ya in sacrifice. It seems, not certain, that Heo Jun also disappeared from the scene of the history at that time.
Even though they shared the same color among the writers of KAPF, the phases of their lives and literature put on the diversity and versatility indeed like the colors of light through the prism. Going deep into the study not by 'exclusion rule' but by ‘logic of convergence' I get to confirm that there's a certain universality as a common phenomenon in them. And seeing the phases not through the sentiment recalling the memories and the retrospection but through the view of <now-here>, I felt something left to be missed a lot for the cultural spectrum replaced by the political uniformity.
To sum up, first, there was a 'pure passion' as an artist in the lives and literature of the five writers who crossed over into North Korea. Second, even though there were so much differences in their personal ideas and views of the world, there was a nationalistic fervor against Fascism in common. Third, it's certain that even though they were under the division situation of their country, the writers who crossed over into North Korea pursued the object for establishing an ideal socialist state of equality and democracy. Fourth, it is confirmed that the five writers who crossed over into North Korea all got sacrificed in a way in the struggle for the political hegemony. It's the same reason why Lee Chan became the indirect victim, too. Fifth, these artists, who were born in 1910, were criticised for their deficiency of 'severity as a writer'. The reason is that a lot of the writers left their works in the history of the literary movement but few writings left in the reference library where writers practice their creative writings.
