The purpose of this study seeks to examine the method which secures the historicity and popularity simultaneously with the formulation of melodramas, collecting the characteristic of newspaper media on the basis of Jeon, Byeong-sun`s Anything Which Follows Despair. Especially, this work has `Yeosun Event` as its main material, which was caused from the conclusion of the literary configuration of distorted historic reality on the base of the writer`s personal experience. The writer`s balanced consciousness for the history arranges the historic consciousness of the public for the `Yeosun Event`. The publication and serial publication were caused from the changed social situation and the atmosphere of the press. And the background of this work wasn`t limited into the `Yeosun Event`, but included the situation of the Korean War period as well, which was the important factor for this work to be published soon after the outbreak of 5?6 Military Coup d`etat. This novel is the popular novel which conventionally uses the formality of melodramas. The social melodrama forms the unique mode, combining the narrative structure of melodramas with the characters who experience the realistic social-historic background. This reveals the confused motif which is concealed within the event to confirm the reality of the narrative and shows the fundamental principle of melodrama. The characteristics of social melodrama are examined through the novel as the followings. Above all, the central narrative shows Kang, Seo-Kyeong`s melodramatic love conflict, which vividly describes the process that massive historic events frustrates the pursuit of love and makes this character recognize the fatal love. And when characters are absorbed in personal affairs, this work correlates them with other characters who have the broad social insight. This solves the weakness of melodramatic structures and endows readers with realistic pleasure. Finally, this novel suggests the contemporary moral view which doesn`t fall down into the dichotomy of goodness and badness, which enables readers to approach the configuration methods of the characters and conclusion-drawing techniques more flexibly. Simultaneously, the contemporary moral view delicately connects the living principle which is individualized from the common sense, or rigid ideology with the spontaneous love for humanity. Accordingly, this novel gains the historicity and popularity, using the social melodrama. And this has its validity as a touchstone which enables readers to read the base of subsequent writers` works.
