이 글은 프랑스 철학자이자 작가인 장 폴 사르트르의 일본 번역과 1966년 일본 방문의 사회문화적 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 일본에서 사르트르는 1960년대 중후반까지 많은 독자를 확보하고 있었다. 사르트르에 관심이 상당한 일본에서 1966년 사르트르의 방문은 최대의 문화이벤트라 할 수 있다. 『사르트르 전집』을 간행한 교토의 인문서원은 사르트르에게 ‘일본휴식여행’을 제안한다. 사르트르는 28일 일정으로 일본을 방문했다. 가장 중요한 일정은 세 번의 강연과 히로시마 방문, 베평련 대회 참가였다. 일본 지식계가 세계적 지성 사르트르와 지적 교류를 하는 국면이다. 그의 방일 연구는 외국문학의 번역 수용뿐만 아니라 당대 일본 사회의 지성사를 제한적이지만 究明하는 가치가 있다. 요컨대 이 글은 일본의 사르트르 번역과, 초청 사업을 통한 문화교류 및 수용의 확대, 일본 대중의 사르트르 서적 소비 등을 고찰하여 당대 일본의 지성사와 다층적이고 통시적인 번역문화 현상을 규명하는 번역문화사 연구다.

영어 초록

The article examines the sociocultural implications of Sartre's works translation in Japan and his visit to Japan in 1966. Sartre had many readers until the mid-1960s in Japan. Because of that concern, Sartre's visit to Japan in 1966 was the biggest cultural event. Jinbunsyoin, which published the complete collection of Sartre, suggested to Sartre to take a 'Japanese Rest Trip'. Sartre visited for 28 days to Japan. The most important schedules were three lectures, a visit to Hiroshima and participation in the Beheiren debate. The Japanese intellectual community had engaged in intellectual exchanges with Sartre, a world-class intellectual. His visit to Japan was not only about accepting translations of foreign literature, but also studying the intellectual history of the Japanese society of the time. In short, this article is a study of the history of translation and culture that identifies intellectual history in Japan and multi-layered and orthodox translation cultural phenomena by considering the Japanese translation of Sartre, invitational projects, and the consumption of Sartre books.
