In Heidelberg Disputation(1518), Luther declares theologia crucis as a true theology rejecting theologia gloriae. Luther’s theologia crucis intends not to supplement or to revise a scholastic theology in any way, but rather to an anti-scholastic theology. Luther contrasts theologia gloriae as the postscholastic theology by developing his theologia crucis through Heidelberg Disputation. What kind of God would he want to describe in his theologia crucis? Through Heidelberg Disputation, Luther wants to say that God is hidden in his revelation and that God reveals himself on the cross of Christ. From this perspective, Luther’s understanding of God is a revealing God. More specifically, God is revealed through[in] the suffering and the cross of Jesus Christ.
On the other hand, the confrontation between theologia crucis and theologia gloriae allows Luther to deal with the problem of God’s perception. Theologia gloriae recognizes God on the basis of God’s creation or world of creation. However, theologia crucis recognizes God through the suffering and the cross of Christ. In other words, theologia gloriae does not relate to the cross of Christ at all, while theologia crucis recognizes God from the cross of Christ. Therefore, Luther contrasts with theologia crucis which seeks God’s perception starting from the cross of Christ, and theologia gloriae which pursues the perception of natural theological God starting from works [achievements]. After all, for Luther, the clear place of God’s perception is just the cross of Christ. God’s perception of the true christian theology as a theology of crucifixion takes place in ‘the crucified Christ’(1 Cor. 1:23).
The Korean church should make 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, a new starting point for reform, and should seek various ways to reform the reality of the Korean church which has faced a serious crisis. In order to do this, the Korean church first has to succeed to the theology and the spirit of Luther and other Reformers. This study examines Luther’s theologia crucis under influence of St. Paul’s theologia crucis beyond the post-scholastic theology, which deals with the theological discourses in theologia crucis of Luther, that is, the paradoxical God who is crucified and hidden on[in] the cross of Christ, and the cross of Christ as the place of revelation of God and the justification by faith. The purpose of this study is to examine critically the trend toward the distorted Korean church today. Through this study, we try to find a way to reform for the Korean church in the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
