한국어 초록

이 논문이 다루고자 하는 요한계시록의 ‘니골라 추종자들’은 요한계시록 해석을 위한 난제에 해당한다. 그것은 니골라 추종자들의 기원과 실체에 대한 정확한 정보를 얻는 것이 불가능하기 때문이다. 이후의 연구에서도 밝히겠지만 니골라 추종자들에 대한 이해의 출발점은 행 6:5에 등장하는 헬라어를 구사하는 유대기독교의 일곱 명 지도자 명단에서 시작된다. 교회사는 전통적으로 방금 언급한 행 6:5의 일곱 명의 명단 중에서도 마지막에 언급되는 ‘안디옥 출신의 유대교 개종자였던 니골라’가 계시록에 나오는 니골라 추종자들의 기원인 것으로 여겨왔다(계 2:6, 15).
그러나 지금 신약학 연구에서는 사도행전의 니골라와 교부들이 주장하는 이단으로서의 니골라 추종자들과는 직접적인 연관이 없다는 결론에 이르고 있다. 오히려 계시록 저자와 니골라 추종자들과의 논쟁은 아직도 신약성경안에 존재하던 강한 유대기독교적인 입장에서 비롯되는 것으로 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 그러므로 필자는 이와 같은 흐름을 염두에 두면서 요한계시록에 니골라 추종자들의 신학적인 입장이 형성된 과정을 살피며, 이 노선이 왜 요한계시록의 저자와 신학적인 갈등을 가지게 되었는지 밝히고 그것을 통해서 궁극적으로 요한계시록 전체를 이해하는 해석을 제시하고자 한다.

영어 초록

The Nicolatians in the Revelation of John poses a difficult problem for the interpretation of the book because it is impossible to obtain accurate information about their origin and true identity. The starting point for the understanding of the Nicolites is Acts 6:5, where a list of seven Greek-speaking leaders of Jewish Christianity appears. According to the traditional understanding by the church fathers, “Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch”, the last one on the list, was the father of the Nicolatians. The current discussions in the New Testament studies, however, have reached the conclusion that there is no direct connection between Nicolaus of Acts and the Nicolatians of Revelation, whom the church fathers deemed to be a heretical group. Rather, the conflict between the author of Revelation and the Nicolatians could be seen as stemming from the strong stream of Jewish Christianity that still existed in the New Testament. In this paper, I survey the process in which the theological positions of the Nicolatians in Book of Revelation were formulated, investigate why there was a theological conflict between the author of the Book and the Nicolatians, and, based on these attempts, present a hermeneutic understanding of the entire book.
