The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of phonological activities usingpicture books on 5-year-old children’s phonological awareness and reading. The
subjects of the study are fifty 5-year-old children. For the study the authors selected
six picture books based on the situated contexts, phonological factors and 5-year-old
children’s developmental level. The experimental group was treated with phonological
activities for fifteen times during six weeks. The control group were treated with regular
linguistic activities based on Nuri Curriculum. The results of this study are as follows.
First, the phonological activities using picture books improved children’s phonological
awareness. Second, the phonological activities using picture books had effect on
children’s reading development.
The results of this study showed that phonological activities using picture books had
positive effect on phonological awareness and reading by helping children to be aware
of phonemes in situated contexts and to learn fundamental reading skills with their own
interests. In conclusion, the study suggests that phonological activities using picture
books should reflect the contexts in which children are situated to improve their reading
development.
