배려 윤리는 정의 윤리의 문제점을 보완해 줄 수 있다는 측면에서 긍정적 역할을 해왔으나 자기 희생과 자기 말살의 위험이 내재해 있다는 비판을 받기도 하였다. 이러한 문제점을 극복하기 위해 자기 배려의 중요성이 제시되어 왔지만, 실제로는 타인 배려에 치중하여 자기 배려는 소홀히 다루어져 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 푸코와 페미니즘을 토대로 자기 배려의 의미를 탐구하고, 자기 배려의 도덕교육은 어떻게 해야 할 것인지를 탐구해 보았다. 푸코의 자기 배려는 자기와 자기와의 관계에 초점을 두며, 자기 통제의 기술을 통해 예술작품을 만들 듯이 주체성을 형성하는 것으로 이해되었지만, 남성의 경험에 치중해 있다. 이에 비해 페미니즘의 자기 배려는 여성의 경험에 치중해 있으며, 자기 존중과 자기 가치감을 갖고, 자기의 필요와 욕구에 부응하는 것으로 이해되었다. 본 연구에서 자기 배려의 의미로 제시한 것은 자기로의 전향을 통한 윤리적 주체로서의 자기 형성이다. 그리하여 자기 배려는 협소하게 도덕적 행동을 하는 것으로만 이해될 것이 아니라 자기와 자기와의 관계를 통해 자기의 존재 형성이라는 폭넓은 관점에서 이해되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 푸코의 주장을 부분적으로 수용하여, 자기 배려를 주체를 형성하는 실존의 미학, 삶의 기술, 존재의 변형으로 간주해야 한다고 생각하지만, 페미니즘의 주장처럼, 자기 존중과 자기 가치감, 관계적 자기, 정서의 중요성 역시 고려해야 한다고 보았다. 또한 자기 배려를 위한 도덕교육의 방법적 원리로서 성찰, 자기화, 존재감을 제시하고, 구체적인 방법으로서 자기 글쓰기, 서사적 능력 함양하기, 긍정적인 자기 대화를 제시하였다.

영어 초록

The ethics of care is regarded as playing a positive role in resolving the problems of the ethics of justice. But the ethics also has the problems of self-sacrifice and self-effacement. To solve the problems, people suggested the care of the self, but the care of the self did not receive the attention. Moral theory focuses on the care of the other. In this study, I studied the meanings of care of the self by Foucault and feminism as well as the direction of moral education of the care of the self. The care of the self for Foucault is related to experiences of man, the relation of self to self, and the formation of subject with respect to self-mastery. The care of the self for feminism is related to experiences of woman, self-respect, self-value and response to her need. I suggested the meaning of the care of the self as ethical self-formation through conversion to self. I accepted the view of self-care of Foucault as technique of living, technique of existence, the transformation of existence and self-formation of the subject. Also I accepted the view of self-care of feminism as self-respect, self-value, self within relationship, and the emotional experience. I suggested self-examination, appropriation, and sense of the self as the principle of method as well as self-writing, narrative capacity and positive self-talk as methods of moral education of the care of the self.
