영어 초록
This paper explores the properties of Korean opposites from the perspective ofcognitive semantics, and the results are as follows:
Research methods that explore opposites include structural semantics, the corpus
approach, the pragmatic approach, and cognitive semantics. Cognitive semantics is
notable in this context in that it approaches the concept of opposites from the open
viewpoints of conceptualization and construal. Therefore, this paper describes six
new semantic properties from the perspective of cognitive semantics, these being
different from the existing discussions about opposites.
Assessment of the subjects has revealed first of all that gradability exists for
membership of classes of opposites. Second, a fuzzy case exists, i.e., gradable
complementaries, which cannot be placed in the categories of antonyms or
complementaries. Third, distribution of opposite pairs and frequency checks
indicate that an asymmetric nature exists. Fourth, the word order in compounding
and blending of opposites is motivated by cognitive inclinations and strategies of
the Korean language community. Fifth, the assessment revealed the utility and
limitation of the corpus approach to the co-occurrence aspects of opposites in
sentences. Finally, the construal process of oppositional concepts was indicated
through their functioning in situational contexts.
