영어 초록This essay explores the historical meaning of Puritan covenant through the lesson of Samson in Samson Agonistes. Milton`s Puritanism has been much debated. However it has not been much studied in terms of covenant thought. Milton`s concept of covenant provides an important theoretical framework of interpreting Samson`s relationship with God. By examining the relationship Milton attempts to cope with the political situation in the pre- and post Restoration period. In this work, Samson wants to have an opportunity to fulfill his historical mission once again after overcoming his failure, which is caused by breaking up the covenant obligation to God. To do so. Samson needs to identify his failure and make spiritual reconciliation with God through repenting his betrayal of his vocation. He initially places the responsibility for his failure on God`s mysterious intervention. However, he begins to accept his $quot;default$quot; in the mission and comes to recognize that God`s ways are just. His awareness continues to be embodied in the process of development from moral degeneration to moral health. He refuses to accept his father`s suggestion as an easy way to release himself and seeks God`s pardon to restore the broken covenant with God. In the meeting with Dalila, he approaches closer to God`s purpose by becoming His $quot;faithful champion$quot; through defeating her $quot;enchanted cup, and warbling charms.$quot; He also copes with Harapha`s insults and, through such a course. he comes to reassert his historical mission. Finally the blind Samson takes his second chance to save his people and performs his duty successfully. This means that the cooperation of God`s favour and Samson s strength is able to defeat the Philistine and the contest between God and Dagon ends in God`s victory. The despair besetting Milton and the English people in the wake of their failure has been dispersed by the wisdom they have acquired through contemplating the events of Samson`s story. They need to remain faithful to their historical mission, waiting for the second chance and should carry out their historical duties like Samson. This is the historical lesson that the Puritan covenant contains in this work.
