영어 초록The purpose of this thesis is to show the followings; 1) The method described in Philebus 16b-19a is essentially the same as the method of division (or dialectic) in the Phaedrus, Sophist and Statesman. 2) Only in the aspect of application the former is different from the latter. The method of the Philebus is one which divides a single form (idea) into kinds $quot;until we could discern the total number between the unlimited (tou apeirou) and the one$quot;(16d8-el), i.e. until we could reach aioUa EtBn. This method is essentially the same as the method of division. Moravscik argues that the method of the Philebus is not the method of division because, while the latter divides things according to genus and species, the former treates the relation of `determinable` to `determinate`. He supposes that Plato distinguished two schemes. But It seems that there is no evidence to prove that. Rather it is evident that Plato has regarded determinable /determinate model as genus/ species model. As for dialectic of the Philebus, it`s new aspect consists in application. In previous Dialogues, Plato applied dialectic to the definition of the Sophist or the Politician. But in the Philebus heuses it to solve the following problems 1) What is the, egood? 2) The serious one-many problem in 15b. 3) The production of the good. Among these especially the third is noteworthy. Plato thinks that the good life is the mixed life consisting in a mixture of pleasure and knowledge. But there may be bad pleasures or bad knowledges that ought not to be included in the mixture. So the method of division is introduced to analyse each component, as a means to determining just what kinds of component to choose. By this method Plato examines $quot;how many kinds of pleasures there are, and what their nature is$quot;. And he does the same of knowledge. As a result, it is shown that there are pure (or true) pleasures and impure pleasures among pleasures. Plato selects pure things if possible, and mixes those to constitute the good life. Also Plato suggests that dialectic can be applied to the production of the good such as music or language. In his opinion, $quot;what make a person a lettered person is knowing the number and the kinds of sounds$quot; by applying dialectic. And knowing this makes a person be able to create various languages by mixing the kinds of sounds. What is more, the same holds for what makes a person a musician. In short, dialectic of the Philebus is the method that reveals the total number between the unlimited and the one. And this method has a significant implication in the production of the good, such as the good life, music, language and so on.
