The purpose of this article is to analyze how Sotaesan (Park, Jungbin 1891-1943) perceived the Japanese imperialism after he created Won-Buddhism. Since 1916, when Korean had already become a colony of Japan, Sotaesan began to do his religious activities and died in 1943, just two years before Korea was liberated from the Japanese colonial rule. During these periods of 1916 to 1943, it were three times which Sotaesan was arrested and investigated by the Japanese policemen for he was suspected of the national independent movement. Because of these suppression against him, he temporally gave up his religious activities. Especially, since 1936, the Japanese police branch-office was established at the front of the headquarter of Won-Buddhism Temple at Iri, Chubuk, and aim to inspect all activities and publications of Won-buddhists. Under these terrible situations, Sotaesan compared Japan with Korea in the concept of the $quot;Social Darwinism.$quot; He thought that if Japan would be considered as a strong man, Korea was a weak man. This kind of Sotaesan`s perception was well grounded in the world view which was widely circulated among the intellectuals in the Korean society at that time. And also his perception was as same as those of Right-wing Nationalists camp who insisted $quot;Effective power-Training Strategy$quot; for national independence in the Korea society from 1910`s to 1920`s. I would like to add further that Sotaesan was critical of the Japanese colonial policy which was consistent with the brutal oppression and exploitation. He argued that the Imperial Japan should lead the Korean society into the more enlightened capitalism This kind of Sotaesan`s perception was well grounded in the religious theory of Won-Buddhism. Consequently, Sotaesan`s religious hope and vision were not to encourage the severe confrontation or fighting between the Japanese and the Koreans, but to restore sincere humanity by way of religion and moralism in order to cure the modern capitalistic civilization of corrupt materialism.
