영어 초록

The paper examines and rejects the attempt of conceptualizing the specific historical meaning of the 20th century in such possible terms as the "Age of Technology", the "Age of Globalization", and the "Age of Extremes" as Hobsbowm does, and the like, and then, in their stead, proposes to define it in terms of the "Age at the Crossroad between the anthropocentic and the ecocentric civilizations." Although until the mid- twenty century the underlying paradigm of history has been anthropocentric and the specific historical meaning of each age can appropriately be described in relation to that of the preceding age within the anthropocentric framework, the specificity of the 20th century can no longer be understood within the anthropocentric paradigm of history. The description of the specificity of the 20th century requires a different frame of reference : it can be understood and described in comparison not to the specificity of 19th century but to the entire previous centuries taken as a whole undolded within the anthropocentric paradigm of history. For Since the mid-century the inadequacy of the anthropocentric paradigm of civilization has become increasingly apparent through the environmental and ecological crises threatening not only the destruction of the animal world but also the possibile extinction of human species, hence history itself. It is in this sense that the 20th century is unique. The uniqueness of the 20th century lies in the fact that the 20th century is at the crossroad between the end of anthropocentic civilization and the possible beginning of a new paradigm of civitization. Since the only conceivable alternative to anthropocentrism is ecocentrism, the crossroad on which the 20th century is placed is the crossroad between the anthropocentric and the ecocentric paradigms. The survival of civilzation, hence, history requires a radical paradigmatic switch from the anthropocentric paradigm of history to the ecocentric paradigm. But it is up to us, humans, to respond appropriately and promptly to this requirement, and thus to assure the continuity of history in the new millennium.
