영어 초록

This paper deals with the question of how writing and reading function in constructing a female subjectivity as it is represented in Hotel Du Lac by a british woman writer, Anita Brookner. Concerning the intricate relationship between language and gender, there have been two distinctive traditions in die history of feminist studies. On one hand, French feminists claimed that women should create their own ways of writing by subverting existing language structure, arguing that language is man-made and, therefore, serves for the persistence of Patriarchy if women write in the same way men do. On the other hand, English and American feminists argued that women can take control of the language rather than being controlled by it. Siding with the English American feminists and agreeing that women have successfully employed language in expressing themselves, this paper further attempts to explain that reading and writing play significant roles in women`s quests for their subjectivities. The protagonist is described as an established romance fiction writer, who suffers from emotional conflicts as a result of her illegitimate love affair with a married maa Therefore, her vocation, romance writing, means more than just a job. It provides the protagonist with the space in which she can create her alternative self. More often than not, for many women romance reading has been a way of wish fulfillment. However, while romance readers could not succeed in discovering their true selves by merely being submerged in the story, our protagonist emerges from it to face her self. That was possible, to a certain degree, because she was the producer of romances as well as a consumer. Another form of writing for the protagonist is writing love letters to her lover. Since, the letters are not meant to be mailed, her letters are like a diary. Performing and keeping balance between two sets of writing, the protagonist finally finds herself. As the title says it, this story takes place at a lake-side Swiss hotel. The setting of the story with lakes, mists, damp lights, and several hotel guests, also serves well for the protagonist`s quest for her subjectivity. That is in the sense that if female subjectivity is more intimately related with the unconscious than the conscious and is in the process of transformation and construction as Kaja Silverman puts it, then the descriptions of the lake where the protagonist often takes long walks represents the fluid and elusive nature of female subjectivity.
