근래 적지 않은 연구자들이 『구운몽』은 이전의 전기소설이 담아내었던 비극 적 정서나 현실 비판적 성과를 제대로 계승하기는커녕 도리어 왜곡시켰다고 평 가하고 있다. 『구운몽』이 전기소설의 비극적인 모티프들을 활용하되 이를 사회 적 현실을 무시한 채 행복한 결말로 재구했다는 것이다. 그러나 『구운몽』은 전기소설과 전혀 다른 차원에서 인간의 삶과 욕망의 문제를 진지하게 성찰하고 있기 때문에 단순하게 결말의 차이만 갖고 소설의 성과나 의의를 논해서는 안 될 것이다. 전기소설의 작가들은 허구로서의 소설이 갖는 문학적 효용성에 대한 인식보다는 소외된 지식인이 자신의 怨望을 토로하는 차원에서 소설을 창작했다. 따라서 전기소설에는 소외된 지식인이 현실에 대해 느끼거나 체감했던 불만이 내 포되어 있기는 하지만, 그것이 사회적 파장을 불러일으키는 힘으로 전화될 가 능성은 매우 희박하다. 그런데 『구운몽』은 양소유의 공개적인 애정편력을 통해 성적 욕망의 다양한 형태와 그에 따른 심리감정 등을 노골적이면서도 생생하게 형상화하고 있다. 그 결과 『구운몽』은 작가가 의도했건 의도하지 않았건 간에 성적 욕망을 억압하는 유교적 도덕관념이나 사회적 관습 및 제도 등 당시의 많은 금기들을 부정하는 효과를 창출하였다. 이러한 『구운몽』의 효과는 바로 작가 서포가 역설적인 환몽구조를 통해 양소유가 추구하는 욕망의 세계를 생생하게 그려내었던 소설미학적 성과의 산물이라고 할 수 있다. 『구운몽』은 인간의 통속적인 욕망을 생생하게 재현함으로써 인간의 욕망과 삶이란 어떤 것이며, 인간은 궁극적으로 무엇을 추구하며 살아가야 할 것인가 에 대한 문제를 진지하게 고민하고 탐색한 작품이다. 이런 점에서 우리 고소설 가운데 『구운몽』만큼 철학적 또는 인식론적 문제를 깊이 있게 다룬 작품은 없다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 그러나 소설사적으로 볼 때, 『구운몽』의 진정한 가치와 의의는 작품이 담아내고 있는 주제의식이나 철학적 문제보다는 소설미 학적 성과에서 찾아져야 할 것이다. 작가인 서포는 『삼국지연의』와 같은 소설이 왜 독자들에게 감동을 주고 또 독자들을 감화시킬 수 있는가에 대한 분명한 인식을 바탕으로 치밀한 구성과 극적 상황의 연출, 일상적 생활상과 사소한 것의 포착, 성적 욕망의 생생한 재현 등을 통해 『구운몽』의 소설적 재미와 진실성을 동시에 확보하였다. 이 점만으로도 『구운몽』은 높게 평가되어야 할 것이며, 『구운몽』이 담아내고 있는 철학적･인식론적 문제의식의 깊이도 이러한 소설미학적 성과를 통해 독자들에게 공감될 수 있었다는 사실을 잊어서는 안 될 것이다.

영어 초록

Many recent researchers evaluate “Goo-Woon-Mong” not only does not properly succeed the tragic feeling old biographic novels contained, but also distorted even. “Goo-Woon-Mong” utilized the tragic motifs of biographic novels but it restructured the end with happiness by ignoring the social reality. However, “Goo-Woon-Mong” sincerely reflects the issues of human life and desire in the different dimension from other biographic novels because its achievement and meaning should not be treated only with difference of its simple end. The Jeongisoseol(傳奇小說) writers create novels at the dimension of uttering the grudge of isolated intellectual other than with perception for the literal benefit of novel as a fiction. Therefore, biographic novels consist of discontent of isolated intellectuals sensing in the reality, but it has little possibility of converting into the strength which can give an impact on the society. However, “Goo-Woon-Mong” preciously and realistically shaped various types of sexual desires and relate psychological feelings through Yang, So-Yoo’s open love affairs. As a result, “Goo-Woon-Mong” created many negative effects tabooed under the Confucius ethics, social customs and system oppressed the sexual desire whether or not the writer intended. Such effects of “Goo-Woon-Mong” are the products of the novel aesthetics achievement which the writer Seo, Porealistically described the world of desire Yang, So-Yoo pursued through the paradoxical structure of empty dream. “Goo-Woon-Mong” is the work of sincere agony and search about what are desire and life of humans and what to pursue in their living ultimately by reappearing the common desire of humans. We could say that there is no other work handled the philosophical or presentational problems deeper than “Goo-Woon-Mong” among our old novels. However, in the view of novel history, the real value and meaning of “Goo-Woon-Mong” are to be found from the novel aesthetic result other than from awareness of the main subject the work consists. The writer Seo Po secured the novel interest and truth at the same time for “Goo-Woon-Mong” by minute structure, creation of dramatic scene, securing details in ordinary life and minimal phenomena and realistic re-appearance of sexual desire on the basis of the clear perception providing the readers inspiration and lessons. “Goo-Woon-Mong” is to be valued high for this perspective, and the depth of philosophical and perceptional issues is not to be forgotten for the readers through such novel aesthetic achievement.
