Chikso is a Korean native cattle breed along with Hanwoo. Hanwoo cattle have been under the national control program of genetic improvement while Chikso cattle have never been. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the growth patterns of Hanwoo and Chikso in terms of body weight and frame size parameters. Body weights and 10 body frame size measures from birth to death of all the animals were collected at Gangwon Livestock Technology Research Institute where Hanwoo cattle and Chikso cattle were raised together. Live body measures up to 24 months of age were used for analyses, which were the measures of the animals born from 1985 to 2015. After comparing the average statistics, records of bulls and steers were further analyzed with general linear models to estimate the best linear unbiased effects of breed and castration status at the time of measurements. Castration statuses were classified by the age at castration. Steers with ‘c.young’ class were castrated at younger than 11 months of ages. Steers with ‘c.yrling’ class were castrated from 11 months to younger than 16 months of ages. And the steers castrated later in life were in class ‘c.mature’. Average birth weights of Hanwoo were 26.1 kg (female) and 28.8 kg (male) while those of Chikso were 24.7 kg (female) and 26.6 kg (male). Average body weight of Hanwoo female calves was 91.1 kg, which was 1.5 kg heavier than that of Chikso female calves. Average body weight of Hanwoo male calves was 84.2 kg, which and age adjusted body weight average was 4 kg heavier than that of Chikso female calves. Body frame size of Hanwoo and Chikso calves at birth or at 3 months of age were not differ, but Hanwoo male calves were some taller in wither height or in hip height than Chikso male calves or than female calves. Differences in body weights of male calves became greater to be about 116 kg at 24 months of age in Hanwoo compared to Chikso. Heavier and larger frame sizes of male Hanwoo than male Chikso were also detected from general linear model analyses. Body weight gains of c.yrling calves were greater than c.young calves after weaning to 18 months of age. And after 18 months of age the differences in body weight gains among castration status were negligible.참고 자료
