본 논문은 미국의 개념미술가 솔 르윗의 벽 드로잉 작업에서 작가가 강조하고자 했 던 아이디어를 작품에서 어떠한 방식으로 구현했는지를 분석하고자 했다. 또한 르윗의 개인적인 관심사인 시노피아를 통해, 그리고 벽 드로잉의 시발점이 되었던 제록스 북 프 로젝트에서 르윗의 작업을 통해 르윗이 벽 드로잉을 시작하게 된 배경을 함께 살펴볼 수 있었다.
벽 드로잉은 르윗이 개념미술가로 전향한 이듬해부터 그가 작고하기 전까지 꾸준하 고 많은 변화를 보여준 작업형태였다. 그 중 벽 드로잉을 시작한 1968년에서부터 1978 년도까지의 벽 드로잉으로 한정한다. 1978년은 뉴욕 현대미술관(Museum of Modern Art, New York)에서 그의 11년간의 작품 활동을 모아 전시한 대규모 회고전이 있었던 때이며, 이 회고전 이후 그는 이탈리아로의 이주한다. 이 시기를 기점으로 이후의 벽 드 로잉은 이전의 것과는 확연하게 다른 양식상의 변화가 있었기 때문이다. 1967년 르윗은 ｢개념미술에 대한 문단들｣과 1969년에 ｢개념미술에 대한 문장들｣을 통해 자신이 하고 자하는 개념미술에 대해 발표하였고 벽 드로잉은 이 두 글이 발표된 중간 시점인 1968 년에 시작되었다. 따라서 1968년이라는 시기는 르윗의 개념미술에서 중요한 의미를 지 니며, 개념미술가로 활동을 시작하는 시기에 제작된 벽 드로잉은 개념미술로의 전환기 를 살필 수 있는 핵심적 활동 결과물이다. 본 고에서는 개념미술가로 활동한 르윗의 초기의 벽 드로잉을 전제로 르윗이 작품에서 아이디어를 강조한 점을 비 물질성, 이탈 리아 르네상스 미술개념이었던 디세뇨, 그리고 아이디어의 비합리적인 특성을 통해 알 수 있다.

영어 초록

This paper is a study on wall drawings of a conceptual artist, Sol LeWitt. LeWitt consistently worked on wall drawings and showed great changes ever since the first drawing of 1968 until he deceased in 2007. After declaring to be a conceptual artist in 1967, LeWitt extended the scope of his drawing ideas to walls. Referring to his art as conceptual art through ｢Paragraphs on Conceptual Art｣ in 1967, he regarded concept or idea as the important aspect of artworks. Conceptual art of LeWitt emphasized fundamental ideas of works which precede the form of works used to deliver ideas of an artist to the viewers. Therefore, wall drawing can be considered as a medium through which he tried to convey his ideas to the viewers.
Wall drawings originated from personal interests of LeWitt about the Renaissance. Having great interest in murals of the Renaissance, LeWitt copied works of Renaissance artists into drawings to focus on the composition of objects in paintings. This was the same as sinopia, or rough sketch of Renaissance murals that contains systematic composition of lines based on mathematics. Attention of LeWitt on sinopia affected the start of wall drawings in that it connects lines as basic unit through mathematical system and lines are directly drawn on walls.
On one hand, LeWitt minimizes materiality of the form and pursues dematerialization of works in order to emphasize ideas. Such dematerialization is also shown by mathematical system which connects lines. Wall drawings with ideas that include mathematical system are correlated with diségno, an artistic concept of the 16th century Renaissance. Diségno is a concept in which ideological form and drawing form are integrated by an artist. Wall drawings contain both forms separated by draftsman, but the two forms are ultimately connected as one through ideas of LeWitt which contain mathematical system.
As such, principles of ideas presented by LeWitt are based on logics of systematic mathematics, and wall drawings appear to be reasonable and rational. However, LeWitt intuitively and irrationally selected systems applied to his ideas. Systems applied to ideas are mechanically embodied on wall drawings to show irrationality of arousing confusion and complexity for the viewers. Ironically, such irrational embodiment of ideas creates rooms for a different creativity, showing possibility for expansion of ideas. This possibility is also shown by the process in which ideas are conveyed to the viewers through wall drawings.
