This study was conducted to figure out what sorts of differences exist between expertresearcher’s theoretical discussion and teacher’s perception on teaching professionalism in social
studies, and to investigate what are the implications for the research on teaching professionalism in
social studies by discussing the meaning of those differences. For this, ten elementary school teachers
who are acknowledged for having teaching professionalism in social studies went through the semistructured
interview. By analyzing the concept of teaching professionalism in social studies with
the basis of contents from the research participants’ interview, four concepts are deducted. And To
compare teacher’s perception and expert researcher’s discussion on teaching professionalism, for
first, teachers had a tendency to perceive teaching professionalism in social studies as teacher’s
concrete ability that is revealed at the frame of one period of class, however, researchers had the
aspect of more comprehensive and discursive research. Second, teachers perceived teaching
professionalism as an ability to solve the actual problems that they encounter at their class processes,
however, researchers discussed it with more fundamental and academic point of view. Third,
teachers were generally inclined to have individual and situational perception on teaching
professionalism, however, in the case of researchers, hierarchical and universal stance was marked
from the aspect of creating the stream for the research on teaching professionalism. To narrow down
the gap between these two group’s perception, the necessity for collaborative research between
teachers and researchers, and a teacher-researcher who can play the role as a bridge between teachers
and researchers, came to the fore.
