SiC powder can be synthesized using silicon sludge from photovoltaic silicon wafer production by heat
treatment with carbon addition. It is known that the conversion of SiC from the mixture of silicon and
carbon is mainly affected by the mole ratio silicon/carbon, and excess carbon is used to obtain the
maximum conversion of SiC. Therefore, the removal process of residual carbon is required to obtain the
SiC powder from SiC and carbon mixture. The aim of this paper is to present the results of
computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling applied to carbon removal process for SiC conversion.
The work was done using the commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT which was used to solve the
steady state, three dimensional, fully viscous Navier Stokes equations. The effects of the mutual
interactions between gaseous phase and particle were simulated by discrete phase modeling approach,
while residual carbon combustion was simulated by the single kinetic rate model.
