This dessertation is to analyze criticaly Antony and Cleopatra, and the play is notonly regarded to be capacious as comedies that Shakespeare wrote, but also to be a problem play. In the play the mixing of comic and tragic perspectives has an effect different from that in both Ohtello and King Lear, Hamlet. In Antony and Cleoptra Rome and Egypt are Perfectly matched a compecting perspectives, as Iago in Othello. The moral certainty is entirely absent from Antony and Cleoptra. The pervasive uncertainy and conflicting judgement about motives and stature of Antony and Cleopatra bind our perception. It seems to me that Shakespeare attempts in this play to imagine realistically the possibilities of erotic experience outside the Oedipal triangle, and also that the central characters Antony and Cleopatra enact an androgynous pattern of erotic relation, turning out to have its own implications.
