省齋 柳重敎의 詩文學 一考

朝鮮 말기는 민생의 파탄과 신분질서의 동요 등의 內憂와 외세의 침략으로 총체적 위기에 직면해 있었으며, 이를 극복하기 위한 방법에 있어서도 朝野는 開化派와 衛正斥邪派로 나뉘어 치열한 논쟁을 벌였다.省齋 柳重敎는 重庵 이후 대표적 위정척사파인 화서학파를 이끈 3대 지도자로써, 그는 당대의 국가 사회적 문제를 극복하기 위한 방법으로 유학의 학문적 심화와 수호라고 보고, 이를 실천하기 위해 많은 유학관련 저서와 詩 99題 135首의 작품을 남겼다. 그의 많은 저작에 비해 시작품이 적은 것은 그가 시인이라기보다는 道學者로서 시의 저작보다는 학문에 전념한 결과라고 할 수 있다.그의 시문학 세계는, 첫째, ‘斯道守護의 意志’를 들어내고 있다. 여기에서 그는 六經의 奧旨에 밝아야 三綱과 五常을 밝힐 수 있게 되고, 이를 통해 인륜을 회복할 수 있으며, 이를 수호하는 것이 당대의 현실 문제를 극복할 수 있는 길이라고 여겼다. 둘째, ‘斥和攘夷의 實踐’ 의지를 詩化하고 있다. 그는 조선을 침범한 제국주의 ‘洋倭’를 ‘夷’로 인식하고, 洋倭의 세력을 조선 땅에 들여 놓지 못하게 하여 전통적 가치를 지키는 것이 國難을 극복하는 길이라는 여겼다. 셋째, ‘安身立命의 追求’를 詩化하고 있다. 그는 衛正斥邪 활동을 통한 斯道의 수호가 불가하다고 판단하고 安身立命을 통한 훗날을 도모하기 위해 속세의 名利를 멀리하고 顔子의 삶을 표준으로 삼아 自然樂을 즐기며 많은 문도들을 양성하여 훗날을 기약하고자 하는 의지를 詩化하고 있다.

영어 초록

Late Joseon was confronted with a total crisis due to domestic concerns including the crash of people’s life and the disturbance in the class order, and external powers’ invasion. In order to find out a way out of the crisis, the government officials were divided into the enlightenment faction and the expulsion faction, engaging in intensive debates. Seongjae Ryu Gung-gyo, the 3rd leader of the Hwaseo School, which represented the expulsion faction after Jung-am, took academic deepening and protection of Confucianism as a way to overcome the national-social problems of the times, and in order to carry it into practice, he presented many Confucianism-related books and 135 poems under 99 titles. This was a result of his commitment to scholarship as a Taoist scholar rather than to poem writing as a poet. His poetic world, first of all, poeticizes ‘will of protecting Confucian principles.’ He thought that one could shed light on the three bonds and the five moral rules based on acquaintance with the six bibles, through which one could recover humanity, and that protecting them was a way to overcome the problems of reality of the times. Second, his poetic world poeticizes ‘will of rejecting negotiation and Western barbarians.’He believed that it would be the way to overcoming national difficulties to recognize the Joseon-invading imperialist ‘Western and Japanese powers’ as ‘the savages’and protect traditional values by preventing them from stepping into the land of Joseon. Third, his poetic world poeticizes ‘pursuit of retirement and waiting out.’Judging that protection of Confucian principles through guarding the justice and expelling the evil would be impossible, he attempted to bide the time by enjoying natural delights and cultivating students away from the worldly honors and benefits based on Anja’s life in order to plan the future through retirement and waiting out.
