초록

박물관은 사회의 변화와 관람객의 요구에 따라 다양한 변화를 시도하고 있다. 그
중 박물관의 주요 기능이자 대중들과 직접적으로 만나고 소통하는 대표적인 기능인
전시는 이러한 환경 변화에 맞춰 다양한 유형으로 나타나고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이
러한 박물관 전시의 다양한 유형 중 스토리텔링을 적용한 박물관 전시에 주목하여
이에 관한 구조와 특징을 분석하였다.
현재 박물관 전시에서의 스토리텔링은 실물인 유물과 그 유물이 갖고 있는 이야
기, 유물을 보여주고 이야기를 펼쳐낼 공간, 그리고 이러한 이야기를 표현해 내는 다
양한 기법이 적용되며 복잡하고 다양한 콘텐츠들이 함께 구현되고 있다. 따라서 기
존의 다른 매체에 적용된 스토리텔링과 달리 독특한 구조를 갖고 있다.
스토리텔링 전시는 이야기와 담화의 형식으로 구분할 수 있는데 이야기는 전시의 주
제와 내용 즉 시나리오이며 담론은 이를 바탕으로 전시의 공간에 연출하여 구현하는 것
이라 할 수 있다. 전시 주제는 전시 유물이나 역사적 사실, 사건, 인물, 공간의 역사 등
다양한 요소에서 나오게 되며 이러한 주제를 이야기 구조로 풀게 된다. 이야기는 등장
인물, 사건, 배경의 구성요소를 갖고 기승전결의 서사구조로 이루어진다. 이야기적 요소
는 주로 전시의 중심인 유물에서 나오게 되며 이는 스토리텔링 전시에서 가장 중요한
요소가 된다. 유물의 이야기는 전시의 시나리오에 영향을 주게 되며 전체적인 전시 공간으로 구현되거나 단편적인 공간으로 구현된다. 전시의 담론은 전시 공간에 전시의 주제
와 시나리오를 바탕으로 전시 공간에 표현되며 다양한 연출기법들로 담론화 된다.
이처럼 본 연구에서는 스토리텔링 전시에 대해 구조에 대해 분석하고 특성을 알아
보았다. 하지만 이러한 박물관 스토리텔링 전시는 기획자의 의도에 따라 전시의 이
야기와 전시 공간 구현에 차이가 있기 때문에 다양하게 표현될 수 있으며 정형화된
구조나 방법으로 정의내리기가 어렵다는데 한계가 있다. 이 연구를 통해 박물관 스
토리텔링 전시의 발전에 도움이 되기를 바라고 이에 대한 연구가 계속되어 지기를
기대한다.

영어초록

Museums are making attempts to bring new changes that reflect the demands of the
visitors and the current social trends. Exhibition, a key function of a museum where
it can reach out to the public in direct communications, are also taking on diverse
forms in the backdrop of these changes. Of many such forms of exhibition, this study
focuses on the storytelling method used in museum exhibition to analyze the basic
structure of such exhibition method.
Currently, the storytelling method in museum exhibition use many expression media
such as the presentation of the artefact and its story, use of the space to show the
artefact and tell the story behind it and many tactics to express the story in an
effective and engaging manner. In this process, many complicated and diverse
contents are being used to improve the visitor’s experience. Thus, the storytelling
method employed in the museum exhibition have a unique structure and composition
that are quite different from the traditional storytelling method. A storytelling
exhibition comprises of the story aspect and the discourse aspect. The story aspect
refers to the topic and the content of the exhibition, in other words, the scenario.
The discourse aspect is the spatial representation within the exhibition area and
physical or visual communication of the story aspect.
The exhibition topics come from various sources such as the exhibited artefacts,
historical facts, events, personages, and history of the space, etc. Such topics are
explored in richer detail in the framework of a story. The story consists of literary
elements such as character, event, background and plot structure. The physical
representations of these dramatic elements are provided by the artefacts and make up
the most important aspect of the storytelling exhibition. The story behind an artefact
affects the scenario of the exhibition and is embodied throughout the whole exhibition
or in different sections of the exhibition. The discourse of the exhibition is expressed
in the physical space through the topic and scenario of the exhibition. A variety of methods and media are used to present the discourse.
As seen here, this study examined the structure of a storytelling exhibition in a
museum. However, these can vary depending on the exhibition manager’s intentions in
a given storytelling exhibition in terms of the story itself and spatial representations.
Thus, it is difficult to define this approach with a formulated structure or
methodology. This study was conducted in the hope of contributing to the
advancement in the field of storytelling exhibition in museums and that there will be
continuous studies on this topic in the future.
