평균수명의 연장에 따라 조부모기도 점점 길어지고 있다. 노년기 삶에서 조부모역할이 중요해졌음
에도 불구하고 맞벌이자녀를 위한 손자녀양육자로서의 조부모에 초점을 둔 연구가 대부분으로 조부
모됨에 대한 근본적 성찰이나 변화하는 조부모의 모습에 대한 기초적인 학문적 탐구가 부족한 편으
로 인식된다. 본 연구에서는 문헌연구방법을 토대로 조부모됨 및 조부모역할 수행에 관한 국내외
선행연구를 고찰하고 조부모역할에 관한 이론적 기초를 포괄적으로 검토하고 한국적 성공적 노화모
형에서 조부모가 인식하는 손자녀의 의미를 알아보았다. 또한 문학 작품에 반영된 우리시대의 일상
의 조부모의 모습을 살펴보고, 조부모와 손자녀가 함께 시간과 가족의 기억을 공유할 수 있는 메모
리박스 프로그램을 소개하였다. 또한 조부모역할을 지원하는 성인교육 프로그램의 개발 가능성에
대해 논의하였다.

영어 초록

This paper was undertaken to provide an overview on the meaning and characteristics of
grandparenthood and grandparenting. Due to extended life expectancy, Koreans now have a
longer period of grandparenthood which makes it more important for successful aging. Previous
studies on grandparents in Korea have been mostly focused on grandmothers who take care of
their grandchildren on behalf of their grown-up, working children. In this study, however, a
broader spectrum of literature on grandparenthood was reviewed to present more diverse images
of grandparents. The “memory box” approach, which is intended to encourage grandchildren to
understand and connect to their grandparents, was discussed. Finally, a call was made to
develop new adult education programs for grandparents.
