Reid’s answer to Molyneux's question the question about the ability
of a blind person, newly given sight, to discriminate between a cube
and a sphere via vision should be a definitive ‘yes’ on the basis of the
role of sensations in Reid's theory of perception. And it is ‘yes.’ But it
is also ‘no.’ Reid explicitly answers the question in seemingly
contradictory ways. I attempt to diffuse this apparent confusion by
showing that Reid's response differs depending upon the subject of
whom the question is posed. Subjects capable of abstract spatial
reasoning blind mathematicians, say will distinguish the cube from the
sphere. Cheselden’s famous young patient, though, is not capable of
doing so. After showing how this pair of answers aptly follows from
Reid’s Newtonian method, I describe three ways his ‘yes’ answer
serves his direct theory of perception.
