Traces of arts since 1960s showed flow of abstraction centeringaround minimalism along with vanguard pop art showing realism
and suggested new views about recreation. Pop art found a way
out of various possibilities for the later artists by removing firm
boundary of the previous aesthetics. Andy Warhol (1928-1987),
one of the representative pop artists, crossed boundaries of high
art and pop art and brought about various discussions in the world
of art. He did many daring things that exerted impacts to the
definitions of art in many ways. As a result, different views of art
critics and culture theorists about his activities and influences have
drawn sharp-edged problems of modern art to our attention.
We can read a counteractive impact that pop art exerted on
the previous world of art by retracing the thoughts about Warhol’
s works expressed by aesthetician and philosophers including
Arthur C. Danto who instanced Brillo Box by Andy Warhol in
1964 to mention about ‘The end of art’. In the past, there was
unspoken belief that only an art work can be identified as an
art work. However, with modern art, it requires one to ask a
philosophical question why that particular work is an art work.
It is because although Brillo Box that Danto saw in the show of
Andy Warhol had no difference from ordinary objects in terms of
its appearance, it is defined as an artwork. Therefore, difference
between an artwork and a mere object cannot be identified with
naked eyes. In order to understand what is an art work, thoughts
must be converted into sensed experiences, which implies that we
need to think philosophically.
However, for Danto’s eschatology of art derived from Andy
Warhol’s Brillo Box, its process is restricted within the limits of
the art concept defined in the short history of art, which makes
it difficult to approach the kernel of a question from different
angels. We need to recall the fact that expression-oriented art
works after 19th century have widen the gap between them and
the role that art used to play before. It is required to ask oneself
what is the role of today’s art works among various roles that art
has for people. By looking into different areas and functions of
visual art which has been diluted with today’s pop art, we might
be able to find a clue for the question of visual art’s role, which
is not affecting ordinary audiences anymore. According to Danto’
s explanation, an art work should have meanings that replace
perceptual beauty with non-perceptual meaning. Thus, it should
be about something and that something has to be realized in the
art work, which is the same condition that applies to pop art or
commercial art. To find out if it is about seriousness of art in the
past or conventionality, might be the key to this question.
Interests in populism of visual art which was ignited by Andy
Warhol brought about conversion of views in art history which
couldn’t deviate from a line of tradition and formalism. Antiformalism
that has been continuously developing since 1950s
together with revitalization of consumer culture and media, made
us naturally accept populist propensity and made us realize that
anti-formalism is not vulgar but it is about substantial reality. All
activities including paintings, movies, magazines and writings
done by Warhol allow us to understand that he had always been
closely adhering to his days. And the outcomes are enjoying
higher fame and value with each passing day. It is because the
real value is hidden behind splendidness, which can be seen in
the appearance of the outcome. Pop art that Warhol brought into
the world removed a line distinguishing pure art and commercial
art as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ taste, respectively. He created art works that
many of spectators find irresistible and by bridging spectators to
art works to the deeper level, he invites spectators to communicate
with his art works.
