The theme of this essay is the thought of reverence towardsHeaven by Toegye. Existing almost all researches have dealt
with this theme within the Toegye school from Toegye to Dasan.
This is a method which explains Toegye's concept of Heaven
only in the Confucianism context. However, when we approach it
from the point of the history of thought, it is wonder what has
influenced Toegye's thought of tien and how it has been succeed
after Dasan.
This research approaches the theme from the more broad
viewpoint of the history of Chosun ranging from the early period
of Chosun Dynasty to Eastern Learning(Tonghak). And I estimate
the thought of reverence towards Heaven by Toegye resonates
with that of Korean thought before Toegye. The reason why I
take this method is that I hope it will show a difference between
the thought of Chinese and that of Korea as well as between
Chushi Learning and Toegye Learning.
To be specific, I coined the category of 'Heaven Learning'(天
學) to describe the strong tendency of reverence towards Heaven
in the history of Korean thought which seems to me one of the
defining character of Korean history, and I believe this category
will explain the difference between the thought of Chushi and
Toegye. I analyzed the same concept of 'serving Heaven'(事天)
in the interpretaions of Western Inscription by Chushi and
Toegye respectively, and this reveals that the concept of tien in
Chushi's 'serving Heaven' mainly means 'the principle of tien' or
'Heaven and Earth' whereas that of Toegye 'Hanul' as a religious
and transcendental entity.
Morever, Toegye maintains that Confucian King have to revere
Heaven like parents, which I call 'the thought of filial piety for
It affects the concept of Li(理) in Toegye',
and, as a result Heaven, Li and Lord on High are regarded as
the same entity and Li is considered as a spiritual entity(神).
This tendency can be traced back to the Myth of Dangun(檀君神
話) or a story of Korea's legendary founder, and has been fully
realized as a Eastern Learning(東學) in 19C. I think this tendency is
distinct from Chinese or Japanese thought in that Chinese Heaven is
mainly political and ethical rather than religious and Japanese
thought emphasizes on Kami(かみ) rather than Heaven.
Certainly, the thought of 'reverence'(敬) and 'serving Heaven'
(事天) can be said to be originated from Chushi. However,
Heaven of Chushi is mainly focused on Li whereas that of
Toegye on Hanul as well as Li. Similarly, the connotation of
'reverence' in Chushi and Toegye subtly differs in that Chushi
emphasizes concentration of mind whereas Toegye emphasizes
revering Heaven as well. I think this slight difference explains
the birth of Eastern Learning in Korea. The more emphasis on
serving Heaven in Toegye's thought was a potential cause of the
advent of indigenous Eastern Learning in the late period of
Chosun dynasty.
