Dying is not merely seem as nothing or finishing of the life by the ancient Koreans.The view and attitude toward die of them are an expression of the other side of life.
Their concepts of the death are not involved the meaning of ‘Sin’, ‘Destroy of body and soul, or ‘Lack of life’, Which should be main conceptions of western thoughts.
Immortality of soul is the basic foundation of old Koreans views. Thus belief to the Immortality (athanasia) expressed as a secularism every state of their attitude toward life. So as to speak, seeing as a vertical dimension, their secularism is spread by present intensificated one and horizontal dimensional (The Concept of space) point of world veiw are appeared by harmonisusely relation itself.
Attitudes toward living and dying of old Korean are summarizing as follows.
1) Dying is not change the order from the present status(earthly order)
2) Dying is not change from the earthly will and hope.
3) Living and dying communicate each other.
4) Dying is not get rid of materalistic needs.
5) Dying never devide ‘mé from ‘You’.
As like thus our ancestors view of dying are modified and transformated by the acceptance of foreign ideas. (Budhism, Confucianism and Taoism) as follows.
1) Budhism, Inflow of Budhism given the thought of an inferno to the ancient Korean and this thought of inferno influenced many side of their attitude toward life.
2) Confucianism; Propagation of Confucianism admitted the thought of an ancestor worship and the thought of ‘Heavens Will’ (天命) Which are curries favor with old Koreans similar archetypus with religion.
3) Taoism; The image of a Taoistic Immortal(仙人) are jointed with a supernatural being and a hermit(Retirement from the world) thoughts of Koreans.
4) The theory of Geomenancy; Inflows of this theory of Geomancy (the geomanitic system used in choosing auspicious sites for graves and houses) from the china are tying together our old folk beliefs as the view of Father Heaven and Mother Earth. (天父ㆍ地母觀) Nowday educational theories and practices in Korea are destituted of view of Time and not inclusivelys treat living phenomena as a wholeness including both side of living and dying. We must discovering our archetypus thought patterns in the subconscious structures of Koreans thinking.
