The materials of folklore literature, being formed throughout a long time, has been recognized to be a great value as a source for today's culture industry. People began to acknowledge its value as an asset in today's culture business. In 2004, Jeju Island organized the 1st Festival of the Myth of Songdang(pine tree shrine), based on the Songdang-bonpuri(the myth of the origin of Songdang), which was handed down orally over hundreds of years. But this festival was outlived since then because it did not meet the expectations in terms of economic productivity. This work is aimed at awakening public attention by looking into its meaning and the importance so that the festival is worth to be held regularly in the future.
Songdang-bonpuri is a myth on the Goddess called Kumbaikju, the guardian of the village of Songdangri, which has been transmitted orally throughout the shaman rituals. A God Sochunguk and a Goddess Kumbaikju had 8(18) sons, 8(28) daughters, 78 grand-children and 378 relatives. Later, Kumbaikju became the goddess of Songdang; Sochunguk, the god of Al-Songdang (down the area of Songdang); the eldest son, the god of Mt. Halla and the rest of the children became the gods of well-known shrines in Jeju Island such as Kwangyangdang, Nehwadang. The area Songdang, according to Songdang-bonpuri, is a birth place or somewhat like a root of guardians of villages in Jeju Island. This explains why the festival was named The Purigong(the meaning of the root of gods)-the Festival of the Myth of Songdang.
As far as the myth of Songdang is concerned, the festival has an advantage of embracing 8-18 villages. There is also a strong possibility of a character business with the myth of the Goddess of Fertility and the heroic God who rules over the land, sea, Mt. Halla. And the festival can be a driving force to set up a Museum of Mythology and a Mythology Theme Park. On top of all these benefits, new cuisine with specialties of Jeju Island such as pheasant, venison, horse-meat will be an asset to attract tourists. The region of Songdang boasts magnificent landscape like mountainous scenery, wilderness, highly acclaimed Orum and a forest path. Putting all these facts together, it is more than likely the festival of Songdang myth will be a success. There are not only less festivals in the district of North-Jeju than in other regions but also nothing around Baikjung in mid July by the lunar calendar. Moreover, no festival is based on mythology. The district of North-Jeju, therefore, needs to support and revitalize festivals for publicity of Jeju Island and regional economy.
Success of all festivals relies heavily upon time and experience. Expecting a success in the first attempt is somewhat like forcing a baby to run. The festival of Songdang myth is worthy of more attention and support to make the most of it since it has a great potential. Jeju Island is often called a birth place of gods and goddess and it is about time to have at least one festival based on a mythology.
