지난 20-30년 동안 한국의 가족치료 분야에서는 다양한 가족치료이론을 국내에 도입함으로써 우리사회의 가족문제에 대한 접근에 전기를 마련했다. 변화하는 우리사회의 가치관, 가족구조, 가족관계양상에 따라 가족치료 분야에서는 다양한 가족과 문제유형을 대상으로 하는 가족치료모델의 개발에 대한 필요성이 커지고 있다. 동시에, 도입된 이론을 이러한 대상과 문제에 적절히 활용하기 위해 제 이론들을 우리의 문화적 상황에 맞게 수정 적용하는데 대한 요구도가 커지고 있다. 이에 따라, 21세기 가족치료 분야의 최대과제는 도입된 이론을 우리의 문화적인 특성에 적절하게 수정·보완함으로써 가족치료방법을 보다 활성화시키는 것임은 우리 모두 공감하는 바일 것이다. 이러한 상황적 필요성에 따라, 본고에서는 가족치료이론의 효시로써 미국에서 널리 사용되어 온 Bowen의 가족체계이론 (Family Systems Theory)을 대상으로 한국가족에 대한 적용가능성을 고찰하고자 한다. 이 과정에서 Bowen 이론의 문화적인 보편성과 특수성을 논함으로써 그의 이론 중 문화간 장벽을 초월하여 적용될 수 있는 측면과 근본적인 문화적 차이로 인해 그 활용의 정도에 제한이 있는 측면에 대해 논의하고, 그의 이론을 한국가족에 적용한 사례를 분석함으로써 이론의 활용가치에 대한 논의의 기초로 삼을 것이다. 이러한 논의의 출발로써 II장에서 Bowen의 가족치료이론을 간략히 소개하고자 하는데, 이 과정에서 언급되는 wen의 이론은 그가 집필한 다수의 저서 중 세 문헌 (1988, 6, 1966)을 바탕으로 한다.

영어 초록

This paper examines the applicability of Bowen's family systems theory to Korean families in modern Korea. It discusses the characteristics of a family and family relationships that are common to both the mainstream American and modern Korean cultures, and suggests the adequacy of various concepts in Bowen's theory to working with Koreans. On the other hand, by delineating the differences between the cultures in terms of defining the nature of the ideal human relationship and the means of achieving it, this paper points out the limited applicability of the concept of self-differentiation. Although it may vary by individual and by family, Koreans may find it rather easier to accept "integrity" as a symbol of maturity than "self-differentiation." A case of a mother, whose son has suffered from schizophrenia and now lives in the community, is presented as an example of a cross-cultural application of Bowen's theory.
