목적: To review the cases of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in virgin women, and to investigate the clinical characteristics of the patients 방법: Data from the women who underwent surgical management for PID from 2002 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Among the patients, only virginal women who had denied sexual history were included into this study for analyzing the medico-surgical history, clinical progress, surgical record, and pathologic reports. Published literature was also reviewed. 결과: Out of 122 women diagnosed as PID after surgery at the Korea University Guro Hospital, five were virgin (4.1%). The mean age of the patients was 20.4 years (range, 14-24), and all presented abdominal pain due to tubo-ovarian abscess. The mean diameter of pelvic abscess pocket on the preoperative imaging was 6.5 cm (range, 2.6-15.0 cm). On preoperative evaluation, only one case was diagnosed as tubo-ovarian abscess, others were expected to be either endometrioma or other benign ovarian cysts. One of five patients had a predisposing condition of urinary tract infection, but the others had no definite risk factors. Evaluation through literature data showed that the most common causative bacteria was Escherichia coli, and urinary tract infection was the main possible cause. 결론: PID in virgin women is rare, but it should be taken under consideration in all women with abdominal pain regardless of sexual history, particularly in women who had a history of recent urogenital infection.
