영어 초록
Discourse markers are linguistic elements that signal relationships between units of talk, relations at the exchange, action, ideational, and participation framework levels of discourse. The researcher examines the use of different discourse markers, including and, but, so, and well, as used by four 9 to 11-year-old girls, Korean children who resided in the United States of America. The data were taken from a natural interactive context, which included playing games or storytelling for a total of 6 hours. The researcher focused on what roles discourse markers play in communication management and discourse coherence. I examined whether there are salient differences in discourse markers by L1 and L2 children. In addition, I suggested the pedagogical implications of discourse markers in ESL classes. It is expected that the use of discourse markers shows the stage of children’s acquisition because they signal L2 semantic/pragmatic knowledge of discourse in which children are engaged. (Chungnam
