디스토피아는 유토피아와의 이상향과는 반대의 암흑의 세계를 뜻한다. 인간성이 존중받지 못하고, 통제받는 극도의 상태로서, 멋진 신세계나 1984에 잘 묘사되어 있다. 이 소설에서도 통제받는 12개의 지역이 나오는데 이들을 통제하기 위해 실시하는 헝거게임이 중심적인 내용을 이룬다.
