1. What is morphology?
morphology(어형론, 형태론) = morph(“(word)form”) + -ology(“study of”)
the study of word system
the study of how words are constructed
2. Classes of Words
Content words (내용어) => descriptive words
- nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs
- open class words
Function words (기능어) => grammatical words
- prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, articles
- closed class words
ex) as, some, because, for, to, although, etc.
3. Morphemes
What is the minimal unit of meaning?
– Words are not the minimal unit of meaning.
ex) inaccurate: in ‘not’ + accurate / disappear: dis ‘not’ + appear
– Some morphemes do not really have their own meaning, but have grammatical function.
ex) play, plays, played: -s = third person, sg. present tense -ed = past tense
