최근 난분해성 플라스틱 폐기물에 대한 환경오염 문제가 대두되면서 친환경성의 포장재에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있으며 새로운 개념의 포장재로서 생분해성 필름에 관한 연구가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 생분해성 필름의 소재로는 탄수화물, 단백질, 유지 등이 주로 사용되고 있는데 탄수화물로는 전분이나 셀룰로오스 및 이들의 유도체인 펙틴(pectin)과 알긴산(Alginate), 카라기난(Carrageenan), 키토산(chitosan) 등이 주로 사용되고 있다. 이 중 알긴산(Alginate)은 콜로이드성 다당류로써 해조류 중 갈조류의 세포막과 세포막간 물질을 구성하는 물질로 폴리사카라이드(polysaccharide)의 일종이다.1)알긴산(Alginate)은 β-1,4-D-mannuronic acid(M)와 α-1,4-L-glucuronic acid(G)로 이루어진 직쇄의 공중합체2~3)로써 NMR 분석4~5)이나 통계적 모형 분석6~7)을 통해 알긴산(Alginate)의 (M)와 (G)는 각각 G 블록과 M 블록 또는 MG 블록들이 배열되어 있는 구조로 이루어진다고 보고 되고 있다. 알긴산(Alginate)은 분자 속에 우론산의 카르복시기가 있으므로 산의 성질을 나타내지만 불용성이므로 보통 화학적으로 이용될 때는 나트륨 염(Sodium Alginate)의 형태로 다룬다. Fig. 1과 2에 Alginate와 Sodium Alginate, Calcium Alginate의 구조를 나타내었다.
알긴산 나트륨(Sodium Alginate)은 잘게 부순 갈조를 바람에 건조시킨 것을 묽은 산 또는 묽은 알칼리로 처리하여 침강법, 공기부유법, 원심 분리법 등으로 불순물을 제거하고 알코올을 사용해 분말로 만드는데 수용성이고 점성도가 매우 높으며 안정제 및 증점제로서 그 효과가 우수해 사용 용도가 넓다. 무독성이고 천연에서 얻을 수 있는 무한의 자원일 뿐 아니라 분자량이나 구성 당의 결합 순서 및 구조에 따라 겔 형성 능력, 점도 증진 능력, 수분 흡수 능력, 점착 능력,
