1. Introduction
The four skills required in language learning are obviously Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. However, these four skills are almost always interwinded. For example when you are talking a listening test, you are almost always asked to answer the questions that follow which obviously involves a bit of reading. And when reading a book out loud, you are obviously speaking as well. In saying this, I believe the things a language teacher needs to focus on are Grammar, Pronunciation, Fluency and Understanding.

Grammar is needed for without the knowledge of syntax on cannot be understood or even worse misunderstood. It is the foundation of any language; the building blocks with which that part of a culture is formed. English is also very different in formation from the Korean language. When languages are similar in syntax, for example Japanese and Korean then Grammar is not a skill one needs to place emphasis on. But when they are very different, for example Korean and English then emphasis must be placed on grammar. Koreans learn English grammar from a young age yet they cannot communicate in English either in writing or orally using the correct grammar. It is because fluency is not encouraged.

Fluency according to one dictionary is the ability to speak or write smoothly, easily, or readily. Fluency in regards to language I will define as the level to which one can communicate. For example if I ask someone how they are and they take about 20 seconds to answer, then their fluency level is not very high. On the other hand if they answer immediately then obviously the fluency level is high.
