It is an era of internationalization, and Seoul is becoming globalized. Even if you do not go abroad, it is common to encounter foreigners in Korea. Korea is not really a multi-cultural society, but there are a number of foreign people who live and work in Korea. One of the issues that we must consider is of the kind of culture shock the foreigners may have when they come to Korea. Of course, the language difference is the most significant factor that the foreign resident might experience. In other words, communication and interaction between people are inevitable things to consider when people get accustomed to other culture. I think that one of the noticeable elements in interaction is the act of greeting. It marks the opening of the conversation (Goffman, 1971) and brings interactions together to initiate the speech act. We can easily see variety of greetings and those have their own cultural norms and rules. I heard that the Korean greeting behavior is a bit unique and I started to wonder how the foreigners feel about it when they interact with Koreans. This is the reason why I started working on this research. I researched how they consider Koreans' greeting behavior and how they react to it. The research took place in Itaewon by interviewing some of the foreign residents in Korea.
