Essay Topic: Choose one Asian language and compare its politeness system with English. What problems are suggested for speakers of that language learning English or English speaker learning that language?
In the world, there are numerous languages and they all have different way of expressing politeness. There are many differences between English and Korean languages especially, in their politeness systems such as honorifics and speech style. Obviously, it is very interesting to look at how different the two languages’ politeness systems are. This essay explores some examples the politeness systems of English and Korean language. It also look at what kind of problems English speakers may encounter when they learn Korean.
People in various countries use widely different linguistic rules for their own communication purposes. There are great differences in the use of honorific titles between English and Korean. In English, people call the other person’s first name whether the person is older or a teacher. However, these kinds of things are unimaginable in Korea due to the politeness system of the Korean language. In Korean language, it is not acceptable to call their first name if that person is older than speaker.
