Edgar Allan Poe’s usual flair for the dramatic, short story and simple character a very evident in the “Tell Tale Heart”. While you never formally meet the character in the short story you are very aware of what role he plays, the things he does and why, and you can also see how his actions were influenced by the setting.
The main character in this short novel is only names as “I”; however you are still able to figure out his gender from the very first page. The character points out that during and at the end of the story you may, “fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me,” (Poe, 19). In this sentence you find out that the character is male. You even find out from the character that the old man, “had never wronged me. He had never given me insult,” and yet the character speaks of a dire end, (Poe, 19). In fact the character starts off to try and explain his actions, even when you are not aware of what he has done. He continues his speech by saying, “I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture, a pale blue eye, with film over it,” (Poe, 19). The story
