Balance authenticity and readability in choosing texts
1) Authentic Simple Text
- Devised or located in the real world
- Grammatically and lexically simple
- Preserve the natural redundancy, humor, wit, and other captivating features of the original material
2) Simplified Text
- Simpler than original
- Sometimes remove so much natural redundancy that they actually become difficult
- Textual complexity may be more a product of background schemata
- Therefore, simplified text is not always simpler
